This week has been differnt. Wednesday I was off with a headcold, and early Thursday morn about 12>15 am, I woke my husabnd up being so very sick. We went to the hospital and I went into emergency. Thye tried 6 different times to take me BP, and finally a manul BP cuff worked. They could not find my BP. In the midst I was very sick. I was in emergency till7 AM. I ran through 2 saline bags due to dehydration. I am on a fenrgrin medicine to help with nausea and loosing fluids that way. I just can not seem to get the rest of me back into working order. Ammodium AD hopfully will work soon. I ahd a moderate to bad case of gastro intestinal flu for an adult they said. I have heard of so many little babies coming down with the flu out here. I am trying to find something that would put the bottom have of me, respectivly, back in order with those harsh drugs. Is there anything anyone would know of that could help? Thank oyu.
May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21255Well, it depends on what is the worst part right now. For a stomach virus, I take vinegar or pickles, if you don’t like the straight stuff. For diarrhea, the doctors always told us to eat a BRAT diet….bananas, rice, applesauce, and tea. For the dehydration, should have water, tea, apple juice, pediasure, gatorade. Sodas will dehydrate you further. And absolutely no milk…especially if you are running a fever. Hope you get to feeling better soon.
May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21256I thank you very much for the info. I did do a patical Brat-Banana, (I have no rice right now), applesause, and tea. I grew up drinking ginger ale, toast and tea when I was little. My mom was a nurse aide and thats how she would treat me and my little brother. My dad said that his grandparents (my greats) were great users of viniger. There health was very good. Thank you for your help. 🙂
May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21257hello well, I cannot suggest that you don’t follow your Dr.’s orders!
before I do anything when Iam not feeling well, is using “po chi” that’s how it sounds, you can find these little pills in vial form at your health food of chinese market. I can tell you from expierence that they will do more for me than perscription drugs!
paramount to all is your Dr.’s advice , so keep him informed of all that you do.!
May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21264I have never heard of Po Chi. In what does it get rid of the flu bug…or other bugs?
May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21265Tom,
I did a search on Google and couldn’t find anything on “po chi” as a Chinese herbal medicine. Do you have anymore info on it? I have a friend who has an herb store and is also Native American. She used to be a pharmacist also. I’ll ask her to see what she knows about it.

I would agree with all the advice that was given, although if diarrhea is an issue, you might want to stay go easy on the apple juice. That’s what we give my grandson to keep him regular. Grape juice might be a good substitute instead to help with dehydration.

May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21272All of the stuff I suggested can all be taken with Phenegren and the Immodium that they are already taking. The food and drinks would be supplemental…and easy on the digestion and aid in the dehydration. I agree with the ginger ale…if the fizz isn’t too much for them. Tea is very good…I especially like green tea when I don’t feel good. The main thing for dehydration is steady fluid intake. Before taking any herbal supplements though, I would check with your pharmacist or doctor about any interactions with medicines you are taking.
May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21275As soon as you get to a point where you are not dehydrating you need to take Acidophilus. This will help restore the balance of your colon. You could also get this through yogurt. It is recommended that you take Acidophilus or eat yogurt immediatly upon finishing a round of anti-biotics because antibiotics and other drugs can destroy the good beneficial bacteria that live in a persons intestinal track. Some have been known to get stomach viruses, flu’s, and digestional problems just after a round of antibiotics.
Do Not Take Acidophilus or eat yogurt until you get through your medications or any dehydration event. This advice is just a preventative step you can take in the future to avoid complications or prolonged intestinal disorders that can develope out of infections.
When in doubt check out a vitamin supplement book or herb book at a local library.
I sure hope you get to feeling better.

Good advice about the acidophilus/yogurt after antibiotics, especially some of the newer ones like Leviquin which is particularly hard on the digestive system where the “good” bacteria is needed.
Tom … thanks for the link! I’m going to look around locally to see if it’s available. I’ll ask my “herb friend”. She can probably order it if she doesn’t carry it already.

May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21508Linda knows about some beneficial enzymes that she takes in powder form that really helps. She orders it on-line, I think? Send her an e-mail and ask her, she let me try some at camp out last year and just that one had me believing in the product!!!!
Try it!
May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21517I’ve taken “Three Lac” which is available online. It’s super-potent acidophilus with three new variant strains of lactobacillus. I made a big leap forward out of my fibromyalgia taking it. (FMS can sometimes be caused by intestinal yeast overgrowth.) They’ve got “DanActive” in the yogurt section at wal-mart that looks to be similar, there’s also “Activia”. The Three Lac is $50 a box, so it can be hard to budget, though I’m not sure that it’s any more expensive all told.
This being a virus, I wonder if Ester-C would help. I would never take regular C in high doses with a stomach ailment, but the Ester-C is non-acidic and has enabled me to take high doses, which I do find to help with a virus.
May 12, 2006 at 6:44 pm #21522Kudos to Collins and Linda for mentioning the Acidophillus and Bacillus….my sister had a horrid bout with her “gut” (Colitus) that nearly cost her her life and she is a biologist with enough knowledge to have treated herself….she swears by it and I too am an avid yogurt and “good bacteria” junky…I highly recommend going to a local health food store and purchasing the live culture bacterial supplement or yogurt. My children are regular winter months bacterial yogurt ingesters but I DO avoid giving it to them if they are dealing with diarrhea and it’s dehydration…BRAT is best…I offer: Gatorade, Pedialyte popsicles, Bananas, Rice , Toast, Baked Potatoes, Applesauce….then wean in Toast with a wee bit of jam, Mashed potatoes, Saltines, Ginger Ale and broth. Best of luck to you…wishing you wel health right soon~~~Laurie

More evidences are accumulating that probiotics can be beneficial to children. Lactobacillus acidophillus live cultures have exhibited significant benefits in shortening the course of infectious diarrhea and antibiotic induced diarrhea in children. It is important to realize that Lactobacillus cultures (it may contain a number of various species of Lactobacillus, i.e. L. acidophillus, L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri, L. bulgaricus, etc.) are temperature sensitive and only preparations that require refrigeration are likely to retain an appropriate level of potency.
Dr. K’s comment: Recent British report hails administration of Lactobacillus culture as an inexpensive and possibly effective treatment for Infantile Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis). We have used Lactobacillus culture in conjuction with vitamin C supplementation in a number of children with Atopic Dermatitis and have achieved good results. What could be an even more important information is the suggestion that use of Lactobacillus in this particular condition could stave of onset of childhood asthma frequently associated with Atopic Dermatitis or Infantile Eczema.
