It said not all Indian presence was eradicated, though Some indians were still living at Sugar Loaf as late as the 1730s New hanover county n.c earliest deed book refers to an Indian community at Winnebauin 1737 Now it is called Winnabow. It also said many indian groups moved to the Green Swamp or the bottom lands of the Lumber river in Robeson County n.c places white farmers would not covent. I do know desendents of the waccamaw Siouan still live Columbus County,n.c This is from an old newspaper clipping in my area. Just for someone elses info if they need .At the beggining of the article it said In 1715 Col. Maurice Moore and a force of Tuscarroras heading south to fight the Yamasee Indians. It also said most tuscarroras headed to N.Y , but some stayed here in n.c and moved to Robeson county n.c
Some also stayed in their homeland near Toisnot Swamp in Wilson County this is where we come from: Rogers, Barnes, Woodard, Daniel, Thomas, Gardner, Harrell, Taylor, Webb with the exception of Woodard all of these families can be traced to Indian Woods the Woodards were Nottoway. Today there are other families among us that married into us over the years some we believe are Yawpin and some Saponi but these tribes are much harder to figure out. There are Flowers, Dunn, Wooten, Braswell, Etheridge, Felton, Forbes and Glovers.

Those in Robeson are our cousins, as are the Coharie in Sampson County and the Waccamaw as well. The Waccamaw are made up of some Tuscarora descendents also. There are still Tuscarora all over eastern North Carolina. Those in NY are just a drop in the bucket compared to the Tuscarora population still in North Carolina. :rolleyes:

What debate . I was reading and old newspaper doing what Bill said my own research. You know I read someone saying that this forum pickes and choses I wonder if she was right.Some people you chose to help. The others you seem to make feel not apart. We are all here to learn. of indian are you didnt know what to say because I was given away at birth I guess they dont look at records in the 70s and I just found out some of my real family . I thought this forum had useful info( atleast everyone sounds like they know what their talking about) I was just like everyone else lookng for roots. I posted a picture under my name ,but it does not come up ww/my name. I guess I did that wrong ,but I can see it under my info. Anyway Thank- You.:) 🙂

No, I wasn’t referring to you, Lentz. I was referring to the debate about NY vs NC Tuscarora populations, which always seem to flame up out of control in a heartbeat. Can you try cropping your avatar (the picture of you next to your name) so that only the photo of you is saved, and not the background?

My advice to do your own research meant only that you need to verify any information about your families which was previously researched by others.
If you ask for help or if someone has the info you’re looking for, you’ll get it here, but you would also have to post information for specific people before anyone will be able to help. If you choose to do so, post your specific information on the ‘Share Genealogy Research’ part of the Forum.
There are only a few here doing gen-research on other people’s lines so some requests and inquiries just get buried in the mass of postings before someone starts working on them. It’s not that we pick and choose who we will help, it’s that we may not have the time to help everyone. Then again, some lines have almost no information available.

Bill, I was not trying to say you said something wrong. I was saying that I was taking your advice. I dont want to do all this research to find out I had it wrong. Im sorry if I worded this wrong. You all seem to be wonderful,

Don’t worry about offending anyone with ‘just words’ . You didn’t offend anyone and should not be afraid of doing so here. Don’t worry about it.
Having found your way here, you only need to post enough specific information for someone to be able to help you out – which, may I point out, getting specific info out of you is like pullin’ teeth from a wild animal on the run 🙂
