I have a question for folks (but then again…how else did you all find the board?? lol).
Did you feel an “itch” a “push” for a few years…to “turn over rocks” etc. etc.
Whatever it might be?
Just wondered…
the “coincidences” that I have seen over the last few years are too much! so, it’s all “cool” and things are “falling into place”.
Just thought I’d ask folks here.

If you are talking about researching ancestors, I think there has been an explosion of information on the internet in the past four or five years which have allowed people to connect with records and ‘cousins’ much easier than in the past.
A few years ago I had to go to a to a history center, search hours for possible records and then order them and pay a rental fee, wait two or three weeks to have them delivered, then I only had a little time to access them. And even then, when I went to the history center, if someone else was viewing the information that I had sent and paid for, I had to wait my turn. And since there were way more people than there were machines it often took weeks before I could view the tape/microfisch that I had rented! Now some information is often as close as a few clicks on my mouse and keyboard. So it has been much more inspiring and easier to find information in the past few years.
I don’t know that I felt ‘pushed’ as much as inspired that thre is so much more easily accessable information out there in cyberland now than there was before.

I think that I know what you mean. I researched my father’s family YEARS ago and was pretty much satisfied with what I had found as far as names and dates go. Now, I’ve taken genealogy back up and I’m “driven”. I want to know who they were, what they went through, what it was like for them…Even if it means “turning over rocks” and seeing what is underneath. 😮
No matter who they were–they were a part of who I became.

Well, in that sense, yes, I guess I’m driven too. LOL
The more I learn about my ancestors the more I want to know. Especially since I feel I have begun to ‘know’ these people and they have become real people instead of just distant names on a census page.
But sometimes I get frustrated and have to jump back for a while and take a breath and then re-visit the information I have gathered.
For instance, this year I have found about 4 or 5 new ‘cousins’ ..some on Daddy’s side and some on Mom’s side. I am so overwhelmed with information that I feel buried under it. But that’s a good thing huh? So now, I have to take it one relative at a time and try to absorb and add all the information to my genealogy program. That will take a few months for sure. But it will be a good winter project for me.
And to answer part of the original question..I found this site because my 2nd CousinTom, one of the moderators here told me about it and encouraged me to join.

I found the board from a 1st cousin who claims we are Saponi thru our grandfather’s male line,our gg and ggg grandfathers having been FB.
Dovelady’s right about the “explosion of information on the internet”.I don’t
have the money to do much traveling so the internet’s been very helpful.I subscribe to Ancestry.com@ and genebase.com@(a free site).Ancestry@ is adding new databases every month.Recently,I’ve even been able to see obituary pages and high school yearbook photos.
I’ve also found some distant cousins both on-line and in person.
One cousin I met at church.(unexpectedly).We share a common male ancestor.He’s white;I’m mestizo.His ancestors may well have owned some of my ancestors.I knew a day like that would come!We were “mature” about it and had a rather cordial meeting.May run into each other again.
I’ve been a student of AA and NA history for years.Lately,I’ve been more into the NA aspect of my heritage.Didn’t plan it;it just happened.
I’m not sure if I’m ”driven”.At 51,(yesterday!)I don’t have children.Even if I
never give my family grandchildren,nieces,nephews or cousins,at least I can
give us a sense of who we are.

lol re turning over rocks, well, part of “hidden” things, i guess i mean. 🙂
that is what we are all doing here, turning over history, looking up records seeing what happens and what you find. 🙂
especially with time periods, issues etc.
