March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25143Hi, Tia,
There are several William Pitts households.
Do you have more information on them? About when were they born?
What record did the information come from? Do you have the names of any of their children?
Bill
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25145HI Tia…I have about 40 or so PITTS in my tree…the 1 William I show was born in 1769ish…and was the son of Andrew Pitts (1729 ENG) and Martha nee Stroud (1713 ENG)…they had 12 CH and removed to NC. One son (Jonathan) MD and removed to Floyd Co, KY. My line marry most prominently into the Frasure , Barnett & Sturgill surnames. Do you have any dates or sibling information? Thank you….take care~~~Laurie
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25149No I do not have any more information except that my grandmother quinnie pitts ( one of mela’s and william pitts daughters) told her children this limited info. she died before i was born and hr birth certificate was burned in an annapolis fire in maryland.

March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25155From 1920 Anne Arundel Co., Md Census; ED10 Election District 3; 19 Feb; Sheet 5A; Household 12:
PITTS, MELA; Head; f, B, 38, Widowed; b.Md; father b.Md; mother b.Md.
…….., Pearl; daughter, 19, b. Md.
…….., Ines; dau, 14, Md.
…….., Aver; dau, 13, Md.
…….., QUEENIE; dau, 10, Md.
…….., Louisa; dau, 8, Md. (twin)
…….., Viola; dau, 8, Md. (twin)
…….., William; son, 6, Md.
…….., Melvina; dau, 4, Md.
I’d suggest that “Mela” may be a nickname for Melvina and the daughter was named for her mother.
1910 Anne Arundel Co., Md Census; ED8 Election District 3; 27 April; Sheet 9A; Household 202:
PITTS, William; Laborer, Truck Farm; m, B, 39, marr’d 11 yrs; Md, Md, Md.
…….., MELIA; Wife, f, B, 28; marr’d 11 yrs; Md, Md, Md.
…….., Pearl; dau, 10, Md.
…….., Lottie; dau, 8, Md.
…….., Ines; dau, 6, Md.
…….., Aver; dau, 3, Md.
…….., QUEEN V.; dau, 1 yr 6 months old; Md.
I think this is them in 1900 Baltimore.
1900 Baltimore (city) Md Census; 20th Ward, 6th Pct; 11 June; p.15B; Address: 1523 Montrose St; Household 309:
PITTS, William; Wagon Driver; B, m, b. Dec 1872, 27, m’d 1 yr; Va, Va, Va.
…….., Dora M. E. G.; wife, B, f, Aug 1878, 21, m’d 1 yr; Va, Va, Va.
I’ll see if I can find more info to substanciate this last census entry.
….

March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25156If her full name really started “Dora Mela” I wonder if her father taught a seven-shape singing school, or something like that.
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25162I saw this census record to and i think that this is a close relative because tha mela pitts did have children with these names and the first record is missing a couple of children and the ages do not quite add up , the second census should have tha father listed as either ndn or white or mulatto ndn.
thank you for your help if you find any more info please post them your help is greatly appreciated

March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25163I have never herd of the name dora mela but the profession of teaching is considered the family profession .
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25164what does g stands for in the last census record?
tia
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25171I have no idea what the “G” might stand for.
If William Pitts is Indian in Maryland in the early 1900’s, he’s not going to be listed as Indian but would more likely have been listed as Black or Mulatto than White.
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25175thanks bill childs
so than the first and second census could be who i am looking for and that they are the same people.
than how could i get info to confirm what tribe william and mela pitts would belong to ?
tia
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25183Finding out where William and Mela came from would be the first step and it looks like that is going to be difficult.
Do you know if Mela and William’s children remained in the Annapolis, Anne Arundel County area? What was the last name of the man Queenie married?
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25457hello Bill Childs
The name of the man that Queenie my grang mother married was Samuel Booker who was born in Virginia and he also has indian blood I am thinking that he may be Saopni since he came from either centrial or western Virginia But am not sure all i know for sure is that he is related to the white Bookers who have a plantation somewhere in Virginia and that both the black and white Bookers came from London England together.
March 3, 2007 at 11:06 am #25458Mela and William’s children as far as i know most stayed in the Baltimore Anne Arundle and Washington D.C. area .
