I know we talk about the New River and our families that lived along this river, so I thought I would post it as my Avatar. I believe my family has lived along this river for hundreds of years (they still do), whether they were in Virginia, NC, or WV. This river must hold great meaning…I will have to research this further. This particular part of the New river is in WV; the New River Gorge and it is absolutely beautiful!:)

What is your grandmother’s name? If you want to share. Where was she from? She must have native roots, looking at her photo…:)

Well, doggone, I didn’t say much about it, did I?
Wow, both your grandparents resemble some of my relatives!
The grandmother pictured is my Dad’s mom, Bertha Alice Foley Branch. She was from Patrick County, Virginia. Surnames on her side were Foley, Ross, Anderson, Bouldin, Collins, Bowling, Thomas, Nowlin, etc. I’m still trying to fit those pieces together, though, as some things don’t add up & there are multiple tangled lineages.
Yes, there was a native tradition (from her and grandpa). She had a painting of someone in her family who she said lived on a reservation, but I have yet to figure out who he was. Boy, do I wish I could time travel and ask more questions! The tradition was Cherokee, which was what I was trying to hunt down when I stumbled upon those familiar surnames here at Saponi Town. They were also in the Goinstown vacinity & some of Grandpa’s family married Goins folks, so who knows…
One of the things I can’t figure out is that her father is missing from the census when he should have been 6 years old. Don’t know if it’s a clue or just a mistake by the census taker.
BTW, there’s a photo of Grandma’s parents and one set of her grandparents at this link. Maybe they look familiar to you??

We have some of the same surnames…and our grandmothers have similar features. I too have the surname Thomas(My Hulda Bell m. John Gibson, Grundy, VA). I also have Anderson, and I don’t know if your Bouldin is a variant of Baldwin (Bolden, Balden). I too was told our roots were Cherokee, until a cousin researching told me about the saponi connection. I will check out the link and let you know if I see anything familiar. Thanks Bee.:)

Sparks, Shortridge, Baldwin (Balden, Bolden), Gibson, Adkins, Anderson, Hackney, Lacy, Landreth, Brown, , Bishop, Burnley, Daniel and Vail. This is all I know to date;all the names except Sparks are my paternal grandmother’s line. Sparks was my dad’s father and I know nothing of this line.

I do not have your surnames, but boy, do your people look like mine! In fact, I think that your grandmother looks a bit like me. And your uncle (Do I have that right?) sure looks like my brother.

Yes, I took this picture when I visited my aunts two years ago. The new River is just beautiful and certain times of the year it takes on that sea green color, just awesome. This part of WV is very beautiful, I have one cousin who has never left WV, she says it is the most beautiful place on earth and she travels around WV and takes photos. I have seen some of these photographs they are beautiful.
On a geographical note, West Virginia – nestled in the Appalachian Mountains is the only state that lies completely within the Mountains and valleys of the Appalachian region (http://www.richwooders.com/richwood/facts.htm).

Thanks for sharing your photos, they are wonderful. I am hoping to get a few more from my aunts when I visit as I only have a few.
I found your Boulden surname listed in Pat Spurlock Elder’s book “Melungeons, Examining and Appalachian Legend”. It is listed as follows: Boughton (Boulden?) Mulatto Va. Essex 1943 Also in King and Queen County. If this sounds like your line, you may want to pick up a copy of this book, through Continuity Press.
I also checked the Buchanan County census 1860, http://russellvets.org/census/buchanan/bucen6.html, which has much of my family listed, I don’t know if it will help you or not.
As for your Collins, blondeyelaurie on the forum is your best bet for finding answers, as this is one of her surnames. I am finding many of us here tie together in the family tree, somewhere.:)

Yeah, I see two more that we have in common, Sparks and Daniel. My Sparks is from waaay back in England, though. She was Christopher Branch’s mother (he came to VA around 1620-ish. He and his wife were “good people”). I think we’ve posted about our Daniel lines before. I don’t have anything clear on mine yet except it was my g-g-grandmother’s maiden name. I believe it was English, but it is also a common name among the Cherokee, etc.
I’ve seen Bouldin spelled 3 different ways in the census, in the same house! Not sure of the original spelling, but this is how my family spells it today. In the same area (Patrick Co., VA) are/were Bowlings (today’s spelling). I am related to both. It gets tricky, as there were 3 William Bowling/Bolden/Bolling guys in that area at the same time. I found a couple of Indian claims for some folks who descend from Milly Bowlin of Henry County. They were named Quarles. Think their line was from Thomas Bowlin Jr & Sr. with a Clark woman in there somewhere. The claims are posted online on a Quarles page, by Myra Quarles Brown.
I did buy Pat Spurlock’s book not long ago, after seeing a thread here about it. A good read!
A couple of researchers have posted Collins info that goes back to Albemarle County VA & seems to include my line. If they are correct, I can add the surnames HOLT and SNELL to my list.
I’ll look at that Buchanan County census. We did have family there in the 1940’s, but I’m not sure for how long.

I might need to label my photos better. There’s not one of an uncle (although I have an uncle who looks like Shirley’s grandpa). If you mean the good looking young guy in the first photo (middle), that’s my dad when he was a teen. Those other photos are of the Grandma in my avatar (Alice) when she was older, plus her parents (Foley and Bouldin), plus her maternal grandparents (Bouldin and Foley, hehe. He being a child of a Bouldin and a Collins & she being from the other Bowling line.).
I’ll toss out some more of our surnames & see if any of them are familiar:
Canaday, Witt, Harbour, Wright, Hall, Turner, Joyce, Goard.
It gets tricky, as there were 3 William Bowling/Bolden/Bolling guys in that area at the same time.
Probably irrelevant, but one never knows — are you familiar with Buddy Bolden’s Blues, recorded about 80 years ago by Jelly Roll Morton?
Pappy, thanks. I recall hearing people talk about Jelly Roll, but am not really familiar. Interesting. Buddy Bolden appears to have been from the same generation as my g-grandfather. Cool.
