My family has been traced back to John Austin who stated in Surry county court that he was Saponi Indian. I hope to come to the Pow-Wow and learn more. Any info. on where to learn more of my new found heritage would be greatly appreciated.
May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26600Bill, Tom said I should email you. I found out quite by mistake that I am a direct descendent of John Austin Sr and Hannah Love. To Trace me you simply start with my father Robert W Austin and all the way to Joseph Austin, John Austin Sr and Hannah Love’s son. I of course would like to know more about my heritage. Any suggestions on where I can start?

into your browsher or click this link and this
(different than the Forum)
should take you to an introductory page’ containing historical write-ups on the Saponi and other Eastern Siouan people. Scroll down the page to individual articles of interest.

There is one in the Love line Elizabeth “Betty” Crook that is on a list her from Bruswick as indian. Will post about that in a while.

May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26631Hi again,
A few hours later and i found in old notes that John Austin had two marriages. The first to a saponi woman (no name) and 2nd Hannah Love.
Now the Love family i have had hints for a long time they were part Indian of some kind but am still hopeful there is more info for all of us tracking this down.

May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26727Greeting , I am Thunder Hawk , I have been working on my Native American
Genealogy, for About 20 years now , the Surnames I have been working
on are: RAINWATER, AUSTIN, JOHNS, CROCKER{CROKER] , LEATHERS
PARRIS, PARIS , I found the Rainwater {Cherokee/Choctaw/Lakota, Johns Monacans/Saponi , Austin ? I found Saponi, Cherokee, Choctaw,
and several other Nations My Austin where North Carolinas Areas .
May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26747Welcome thunder Hawk. Have you used our search feature yet to look up your names? You’ll find that some of them occur frequently. Hopefully, you have some cousins on board, Rainwater, Austin particularly.
May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26773Jeanette, From my research it was never proven John Austin Sr had two wives and was said Hannah (Saponie) Love was Saponi Indian. Two of John Sr sons were declared by a Surry County Court to be Saponi and the other two sons were said to Mulegeons therefore the belief they were all of the same mother. Joseph my Descendent was her guardian and witness on many documents after John Sr passed away. My family still resides in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. If you search John Austin sr and Hannah Love it leads to me eventually. I guess we are distant kin so its good to hear from you.
May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26777John,
This is a thrill. I am so pleased to know. Was so excited first to read your post and the deflated and now back to center. This is the line my grandmother talked so much about and all you have to do is look at her and know it is the truth but what are the connections? We will stay in touch and i will be pleased to share anything i know. The tribal names must have changed as they migrated or blended with other tribes. My Dad in the last two weeks of his life told me to check Deleware. Do you know any connection there. My grandma (of course i was in 2nd grade but remember every work she repeated it so many times) said we were from one of the same tribes John Smith visited on his ventures away form Jamestown. She said we are not related to Pochohontis(sp?) but from the same tribe. Curious what i can remember that far back. She also inherited land in “Boston” or maybe East Boston on or about 1931 and my grandad would not let her claim that as it was “indian” land. Does any of that seem fimilar?? Will send photos to this fourm when i can get them scanned. Sure happy to find someone working on the same lineage. Very grateful!

May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26787If your grandma was right about being from the same tribe as Powhatan, that would make you Algonquin, not Siouan, though the two groups were neighboring, so perhaps there was confusion, or perhaps intermarriage. Could she have been talking about South Boston? That’s in Halifax county, which sits in between Mecklenburg and Pittsylvania counties and would be consistent with the Saponi linkage.
Both Techteach and I have lines that were in the Delaware/Maryland area coincidentally, that were also together coincidentally in two or three more locations cross-country over the past few centuries.

May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26788Hi Linda and all,
I am working on three lines of Native American lineage:
Grandpa Hamlin/Hamblen, Watkins, Parker, Geer,Phillips, Smith, McGee
Confirmation of a John Watkins 1729 -1791 as Saponi .. I have Ellizabeth Watkins married to John Hamblen Sr. 1729 -1791 and John Watkins was the name of her father. Her Grandfather was also named John Watkins and he was married to Elizabeth Parker also probable id as indian here in the last few days
Grandma Sprayberry, ,Carr, Love,Howell,Tipton,Starling, (the one that told stories including the John Smith, Pochontais tribal connection as well as South Boston.) Tipton is the only one from Maryland so maybe he was the Delaware. My belief it is Tiptons Mother Starling could be of the Delaware lineage. Just a guess at this point. Grandma did not tell me Delaware but only the John Smith thing and i thought i remember Iraquoi (sp) would that be related to Algonquin? Forgive me but i know so little about eastern tribes.Today the above list of Saponi names included John Love so will check all that out too.
Hamlin/Hamblen Sprayberry etc. is my Dads side
Mamaw: Glenn, Humphrey, Hook,Mayo, Owens, Page
are from my my mothers side.
Papaw is the only one without indian. Or at least no hints of it.
I am working more on my Dad’s lineage only because i have more information but i will get to mothers too.
I have seven relatives born in Prince Edward County, Nottoway.. Many in Halifax, A few in Northumberland, Brunswick, a few in Mecklenburg. It goes back to 1680 and most did not leave the area til about 1800 so there are many to locate for a refined search.
I know it is confusing
I will pay attention to your directions as i have finally collected enough genealogy to know most of the names an now have to get to locations and tribes. Really appreciate everyones help!
I will have a more detailed list of my search soon. I think i will break each line down and post on Genealogy to try to sort it out in one place with proper dates and documents etc.
Note Bold = possible Indian lineage to be verified
Again this is great! thanks again!
Janette
May 24, 2007 at 5:06 pm #26789Your people out of Prince Edward County may be the Algonquin link. Nottoway were Iroquoian. Anything west of the Tidewater, above the fall line, and into the Piedmont would be Siouan (Saponi).
Congratulations on you Love connection (no pun intended). That’s one of only a half dozen or so names that can be traced to a tribal Saponi. It’s very, very rare for any descendant to have that smoking gun. With some of the other names you mention, there’s corroboration from other researchers, but no direct hit. That’s all most of us will ever find, and most of us will be happy with that. What you have is very special. I’m glad to see it belong to someone who will know what to do with it.

Cool. May I ask which lines?
If information I have stumbled upon recently is correct, some of my line may have been in that area, as well as a “barracks” in Pennsylvania. Have the surnames LEWIS or UPTEGROVES/GROVES crossed your path? There’s a William Collins mixed in there, too, but I’ve found conflicting info about whether he came from VA or MD.
