What if any are the Enrollment Requirements for the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe when they reopen their rolls?

I’m pretty sure you must be descended from the core families that settled in the Meadows area of the Haliwa-Saponi tribal area, and trace your descent from the Haliwa-Saponi listed on the base rolls of the tribe

I have a question…Where does one get a look at these roles so you can trace an ancestor back to the tribe? It seems to me that all these government roles (Dawes, Baker, etc.) seem to concentrate only on the tribes that were relocated to “Indian Territory”. What about all of us that are descended from the tribes that were either assimilated in to the white agricultural way of life or had their tribal organization broken up? I know my ancestors were in the Halifax area in the late 1800s and some of them were in Pittsylvania Co. in VA. Others were in Caswell Co. and Rockingham Co. in NC. Since the Adkins side of the family were illiterate farmers near Birch Creek they kept very few records. Everything is based on family stories and since few of us are left there aren’t many of those left.
So were do I turn for acceptance in VA? we are preparing to move back home to VA. The Florida Native American Indian Society in Florida has been very gracious to my wife and I but, they are Cherokee based and we are not descended from Cherokees. Where do all the wandering NA soles go to in VA for comeraderie and acceptance?
Any ideas my friends? Thank you.

When you figure it out…let me know. I have family descended from James River area…what tribe???? Who knows???? The best I can say is mixed blood…and mine ended up in Person county, NC on my mother’s side and down east on my father’s side….I’m just a Heinz variety, I guess…..
My suggestion is to attend pow wows in Virginia and see what feels right…that’s what we have done. And those are the areas where I concentrated my research…letting the ancestors guide me. What area of Virginia are you relocating to now? Keep an eye on the Events thread and I will try to keep the listings posted there as they come up.
Jack, my mother’s people go back to Halifax Co and have been known as native decendants by neighbors and friends. They always seemed to be right on the edge of mixed native communities many times passing as “white” and yet privately preserving their unique history only to have lost all the written information in the 1950’s. None of this information appeared on any public records but now we know was passed to selected family members until the trunk or trunks were lost. The last living family member to have seen the contents was about to leave for the Korean war. Upon his return the two uncles had died and those trunks were gone. This cousin of course cannot remember the Native names or information contained in them. So you may have to be content with many of us who like Becky know we are a general mixture of our Native forebears. I wish you more success than that but maybe we will be able to better identify our proud history which makes us all the more American. This forum and these friends may be the closest we come to any kind of identification but I personally can’t think of a better group and people to be a part of at this time. Ed

I think you’re right Becky, many things have hindered the research on Virginia Natives. Some shards may appear…but for many here, we are led.
I like that you used Heinz variety…my father says we’re Heinz 57…:)

Jack: I agree with you on the fact about the Dawes Rolls and others. I live in MO and have family in OK. Seems as though when my family moved west they related to the other NDN peoples here in the area. I have a GG grandfather who was at the 1895 Cherokee Constitution Convention, he was a signer. He also fought with a Cherokee unit during the Civil War here in MO. I have a GGGrandfather who left VA to join the Union army in WVA and promptly came west just after the war. Probably got run out!
I have just recently found ancestors who came from Granville Co., Buckingham Co., Orange Co., York Co., Kanawha Co., Hanover Co., Loudoun Co., Casswell Co., Guilford Co..
Is there any info the Eastern Tribes use for those families who came west prior to the Civil War. Seems that most of my families came west before the War. Some came west just after the Revolutionary War.
By the way I did go to the Haliwa-Saponi web page and tried to e-mail the contact for enrollment info. NOW, I do realize that the Rolls are temporarily closed. My message came back with no contact.

What are some of your Pittsylvania (and other) County surnames? If you post what you have in the genealogy section, we can help you look.
You would not believe the long post I did for that suggestion you made and because this site doesn’t hold the text in resident memory I lost it trying to add your quote into the post on the other forum. Oh well, I shall try again later. Lesson learned.
Posting any long post on this forum will generally find you booted off/having to sign back in. Typically I will highlight and right click “copy’ before clicking “Post Quick Reply”. If I am asked to sign back in, then I will and click “back” and if what I typed is still there, then I will click “Post Quick Reply” and it will post. If it is not there then I will right click and “paste” then submit. I don’t know if there is an easier way, or if this is the case with other people, but this saves me alot of headache of having to re-type a long response.

You’ve found it. Welcome. When you’ve moved back to VA there will be events those of us who are local try to meet up at. And lots of things we have plans for. I know I’m a bit too inundated with obligations with work and family to be doing as much as I’d like, but I have high hopes for us all. In time, I think we will continue to grow spendidly.
It’s easy to think this ain’t much, but the reality is, we’ve got as strong a community, in some ways stronger, than groups who’ve gone ahead and battered the ramparts to win recognition. And those groups that have a stronger, physical community tend to be quite exclusive and don’t welcome in at-large native descendants.
