I think we all have the same desire to belong to a small tribal community where people care about each other and help out each other. Fortunatly, my wife and I belong to such a group here in FL. The group is like a tribal gathering and like a church. The gatherings are called Moon Ceremonies. But many types of business is carried on such as naming ceremonies, auctions, announcements, crossing over ceremonies etc. We hope we can find such a group in VA.
I don’t really need to belong to a large federally recognized tribe. It would be nice for a sense of being official but, I would not want to be involved in all the “Politics” that come with it.
I would however, like to be able to own eagle feathers and such for religious purposes. The fact that you have to be a card carrying member of a federally recognized tribe before owning a bird of prey feather irritates me to no end. Think about it. I can go out and legally own a gun that can kill someone but I cannot own a bird feather to pray with.
Oops, I just accidentally stepped onto my soap box and digressed.
Anyway, I would love to get together at a pow-wow or something and meet everybody.
Linda is right in that you have found the “community”. I recommend attending the pow wows and meeting up with the Saponitown folks….we have met quite a few in the last few years…and visit with them regularly.

How about this? I seems to be pretty widely accepted that Elvis Presley is part Cherokee; Since he is my 8th cousin, you think it might help me? 🙂

I just noticed your ancestor’s names on your signature line. My wife and I are both descended from the Farrars also. i.e. Farrars Island in Henricus. And I have a friend who is adament her family is Cherokee and their last name is Sorrell. Plus I was looking at a list of common NA names in counties in VA and Sorrell was on several of them.

We will be settling for the next couple of years (While the kid is in High School) in Dinwiddie next to Prince George. After that anything between there and the western edge of VA is open game. Roanoke, and the surrounding area has been the subject of much talk. Halifax, Keysville, even Reidsville NC has been kicked around.
I have much family in Danville and will be back and forth frequently doing relative hugging and genealogy. My wifes folks hail from Galax VA. So I will be open to stopping by and saying hello.
BTW does anyone have a pow-wow drum? I am really going to miss being one of the Sacred Circle drummers. 🙁
Hey Jack…. good to have you aboard. My daddy’s people are from Floyd and Carroll cos but relocated to Danville in the 1930s…. the Daltons on Holland Rd.
My Beasley line is on my mother’s side. Sarah Beasley married William Penn Satterfield in 1843. Her parents were Robert Beasley and Alice Jones. Robert, born about 1795, was son of Stephen Beasley. All from Granville Co, butting up against Caswell in that timeframe.
My darling Becky is proud that her Sorrells made Pleckers List. >;-)

There was a woman in Highland Springs VA who worked at the ice cream store and I think her name was Satterfield and my Grandmother (Beasley) told me this woman was a cousin. I approached the woman with this info once when I was a teenager and she didn’t seem too impressed with the info so I just let it rest.
Well, Jack, when you are visiting in Danville, you are a short drive from us in Person county….as the crow flies. There will be a pow wow in Stuart, VA in September….will you be settled by then? And there are quite a few in the mountains of NC around Old Fort and Spruce Pine. Then there are some that run down Highway 58 from Clarksville to Virginia Beach. There are several links posted on the events forum where you can get information.
And yes, I am grateful to Plecker for mentioning my ancestors on his list…it helped me confirm some things. The Sorrells, Walkers, and Pages are on my father’s maternal side…Westmoreland County for one. Not sure what tribe they would have been….doubtful it was Cherokee. I hope to one day get up to that area and do some research. The Farrars were here in Person county….lots of them….everywhere!

We have them in NE Iowa too, near my folks (and Linda’s for that matter). One of my classmates married a Farrar. There is mention of one in a treaty out of the agency in Prairie Du Chien, WI as having married a Fox woman.

Farrar is not a common name, however we have a Farrar family in our church…small world:)
