We have not been able to get out yet….but we have been up at the firing range quite often.
I might upload a video to youtube of us up at the various gun ranges.
I have fleshed and either salted or frozen 14 hides (whitetail)….. that would also include cutting open 14 skulls and getting the brains into the freezer….. and processing 14 sets of feet and tails (either on or off hides).
I haven’t killed any. … haven’t hunted with a gun in about 30 years. If I needed the meat, I wouldn’t hesitate to hunt again.

We just finished the Muzzle loading season and am now in the Antlerless deer regular fire arms season. Archery is always between all of these seasons from early Oct. through Jan. I gusess I’ll go out and fill 3 more tags this weekend. I have a friend from work who can really use a deer or two.

What Cabela games are you talking about? I don’t have any kind of hunting games. I read the North American Hunter on the ‘puter.
Well, I have my gun tags filled and should go out and use my archery tags. Normally it is too warm for me to go out in th early archery season. Now, right now, it is quite cold. The wind is blowing very hard and I just don’t have the drive to go out and do any more right now. maybe this weekend I’ll change my mind.

I was unable to bow hunt as Tropical Storm Faye flooded my area. I have been out several times with my shotgun but have no deer in the freezer. I’ve seen several but there is a shortage of horns around here. With three days of season left I will probably be without venison this year. I will be hunting small game until March, though. Next year I hope to get up to WV for some decent population and size.
Becky’s nephew got a huge doe the other day. I helped skin her out. She will make a beautiful Hair-on hide. Today was the last day of our hunting season.
Total hides that I have in the works now is 40. Should get one more load from the processor. Gonna have to start boiling feet soon to harvest toenails and bones. I have several hundred legs to process…. and I’m doing 4 antlered skulls as european skull mounts.
They are allowing an extra Bow hunting season in our area. Starts sometime next week. all I know is I still have to stay out of the Nature Preserve while hunting is going on. One of my co workers that hunts brought me a buck’s skull with the atlers still attached. Another friend has promised me hide, but I haven’t seen it yet and I know he has shot several deer, he’s the one that hunts on the Nature Preserve behind my house. You know where I found the hide scraper. My co worker told me of an old flaked laundry detergent you can cure deer hides with I forgot what he call it. I’ll ask him when I get back to work. Hey Cindi, he is probably talking about Ivory flake detergent. Any type of natural soap can be used as the emulsifier to help your oil travel with the water in between the fibers of the hide. Brain works great because, when blended with water, it acts as the oil AND the emulsifier. Looks like I need to have a hide tanning workshop at our next gathering? 😉
Do you ever sell any of your tanned hides? I have helped one of my Uncles years ago and remember how much work and time it takes. I just don’t have that much time to contribute to this under taking. I would like to make some Mocs for my daughters and grandbabies. My sons still have theirs. I also, have a couple of Buckskin Dresses to make. I would like to make myself some new Buckskin Leggins, front tabs. (This is an Osage thing.) I do make the Dresses the way I was taught was a woodland/Cherokee way. Aunt Pollie WhiteBird taught me to make the dresses. I have to make them, my wife can’t sew things much any more. She has a disability and her hands get tired real fast. (We don’t have many glass items left in the Kitchen).

Hey Bob,
My hope is that most of my buckskin will find its way onto the powwow circuit in some form or fashion. ….. whether it be by sell, trade, gift or some other form. I haven’t taken any formal orders yet but much is already spoken for.
I collected another 34 hides from the processor saturday. This time of year, all I do is collect and preserve….. buck in the spring and brain and soften in cool summer days and fall.
