Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I thought this was an interesting article about Virginia’s recognition of the Patawomeck tribe and the possible recognition of the Nottoway tribes in Southampton County.

Thanks,Lone Wolf!
A Nottoway friend of mine sent this link to me over the weekend.
BTW,Wayne Newton was in Richmond several weeks ago to testify for the Patowomeck (Potomac). He’s Patowomeck and Cherokee.

Hello Roca,
Chief Lynette Allston is quoted as saying, “This will allow other native communities throughout Virginia to begin to come forward and present themselves so they too can be identified.”
It will be interesting to see where this may lead for other tribes in Virginia.

I have spoken with Chief Allston and she did say that. Because of all the people that could not be identified as such for the census, va laws and from fear of retribution.
This link has an update to the recognition process.
