Hello Forum,
This is my first post as I am very new to this forum. I am really enjoying reading many of the posts on this board and am glad to have found this website.
I am hoping to discover more information on my paternal ancestors in Pennsylvania. My maiden name is Leckington and as with most names on historical documents ends up with several different spellings – Leckington, Leckenton, Lackenton, Likinton, Liginton, for just a few examples. My name is Barbara (Leckington) Champeaux. I was born in 1948 in Cloquet, Carlton Cty, MN, father Henry Leckington 1911-2003 (born Haugen Twp, Aitkin Cty, MN,) Charles Leckington 1879-1954 (born Lena, Stephenson Cty, IL,) Henry Leckington 1849-1927 (born Mifflintown, Juniata Cty, PA,) Jacob Leckenton/Leckington Jr. 1810-1900 (born Greenwood, Miflin Cty, PA,) Jacob Leckenton Sr, 1765- (born Tuscarora Valley, Waterloo, Juniata Cty, PA,) From Jacob Sr. and on it gets really, really difficult to find records. Not sure who Jacob Sr.’s wife is. Not sure who Jacob Sr.’s parents are though I have come up with a Solomon Leckenton in same area in Pennsylvania so am as sure as one can be without proof that Solomon is Jacob Sr.’s father. Solomon Leckenton 1739- Pennsylvania. No death records or date of death for Jacob Sr. nor for Solomon. Have couple records of Solomon fighting in the French and Indian wars.
I have records that Jacob Sr. adopted Barbara Leckenton, (1808-1896.) She is reported to be full-blood Blackfoot. She married John Peter Varner. Also a story passed down by one of her descendants who states that she was told her grandpa was Blackfoot Indian. So it is very possible that between Solomon and Jacob Sr. there could have been marriages with the Blackfoot who were supposedly in that area of Pennsylvania. Now that I have a new computer, I am hopeful to get back into doing more research. (my old computer died of the Great Blue Screen – RIP)
I will paste one of the records I have for Barbara:
Barbara is believed to be a full-blooded Blackfoot Indian who was raised by a white family by the name of Leighenton. (71 – 77 Pennsylvania Roots & Spreading Branches, 1721 – 1980, Keller, Leckenton, Page (Alis Barge), by Susan O, (Hewitt) Pierson, pp 31-37 Located in PA. State Library.)
1870 US Census Fayette Twp., Juniata co., Roll 1353, Book 1, Page 337, Barbara Varner age 62, Keeping House.
1870, Fayette Twp., Juniata Co., PA. Tax roles, Barbara Varner out, 5 acres at $200. and 1 cow at $15.
1880 US Census, Fayette Twp., Juniata Co., PA., Roll 1136, Book 1, Page 322, Barbara Dietrick Widow, Keeping House, B.E. Kanonvel age 13, niece, (Can’t make out complete spelling of niece’s name), Judon Hunt age 67, Dealer Stationary, Hannah M. 61, wife, Sarah R. daughter 30, Mary J. 24 Teacher , I.E. Jaminson age 38, Foundryman, Kate 39 wife William G. Age 11, son, Mary R., age 9, daughter, Sadie age 7, daughter, Robbie son age 4, Hannh G. daughter age 2. Must have been a big house if all these people lived in it.
1872, Fayette Twp., Tax records, Freeholders, Mrs., (heirs) Jacob Deitrick (Jacob is crossed out and Mrs., (heirs) written in.) – $12 acres at $200. and 14 acres at $100.
Jacob Leckenton, Sr, lived near Evendale in what is now Monroe Twp., Juniata Co., HSJV P 882 “Jacob Likinton” received a warrant Jul 6 1914 and conveyed this tract of 149 acres and 76 perches on Sept. 16 1923 to John Niemond. Note: John Snyder believes this is the same tract of land later owned by Frank Frymoyer, Frank in 1977 lived there with his widowed daughter-in-law. not far from Niemond’s Church.
In 1810 Census of Greenwood Twp Mifflin Co (area near Evendale, now in Monroe Twp., Juniata Co.,) number in household under Jacob Leckington St 2 males under 10, 1 male 45 or over, 3 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 26-45.
Docket D pg 1771 1772 – Mifflintown, Juniata Co., PA. lists heirs of Jacob. Note: in 1977 Ada Hood who is in her nineties told JHS that her grandfather Leckenton was an Indian. From the various spellings of the Name “Leckenton, Lickenton, Lukinton” and reading of the area in which he lived, I was led to believe that this could have been true – after becoming families with the names of those who married into the Patterson lines, with various early family and historical tradition and through realization the inter-marrying of the white men and women with their early Indian neighbors was common.
Below is picture of Barbara Leckenton (supposed to be full-blood Blackfoot) born 1808:

Look forward to any replies and further posts.
