In trying to dig deeper into my moms side and discover who her mystery NA might be,
Ive run across a new name.
I called my Grandma today to ask her about this Pocahontas club and our family history.
She didn’t know what it was all about since she was a kid and they didn’t let the kids in to
see.
She did remember going to Atmur reunions in OH with her Grandma. I took that as a hint to
look up her grandmas mother with that as a last name and hallelujia! Martha Atmur
I found on two census of the Allen county OH, same as her future husband Sylvanous Parker lived.
Which also added another generation, and more Virginians.
So no surprise I find nothing on her dad, Levi Atmore or Atmur b.1700 VA, and wife Louisa b.1806 VA.
They appear to have moved to OH around 1835 since of their ten kids the first to be born in OH is 14 on
the 1850 census. No county known to narrow things down.
Nothing on Genweb, but a couple folks from VA or WV either one, no match.
Nothing but the two census records of OH for him on Ancestry..
I found variants of the name are Atmore, Atmur, Atmer.
I found Atmores in quaker records in OH, PA, and NY,but not my Levi.

Ancestry member trees list Louisa with the Surname of Marshall.
Also say Levi b. 1801 in Harrison, Charles, Virginia.
One states his Parents as Edward Atmore and Mary Douglas.
Running with tree info found on this line Ive come across many new names…I have a lot of new hints to track on these lines also, so things may change as I research further.
My Levi Atmore is stated as being a son of Edward (Atmur) born 1770 VA, and Mary Douglass b.1775 VA.
Nothing beyond Edward at this point, but the Douglass line goes on in trees.
Mary, daughter of Levi Douglass and Nancy Ann Merrick.
As I go through these lines I find controversial records…of course.
Trees put Levi Douglass born 1761 Cecil MD, while a Sons of American Rev record claims Levi born..

William of William 1690 Cecil MD and Mary Scutt 1693 Somerset MD. Douglass and Scutt (Scott?) line going back another generation in MD, losing mother surnames along the way and nothing going beyond Mary Anderson at this point…

Im a bit skeptical at this point because of ages, as trees list her parents as
John Merrick Birth 01 FEB 1717 in ST PETERS PARISH, TALBOT CO., MD and Ann Thompson.
No info on Ann yet, but I would hope she is younger as John would be over 40 when Nancy would be born…
There are a lot of records past John Merrick, and many conflict. A lot to figure out yet there and more tips to follow….In other words subject to change, and I haven’t figured it all out yet.

I’m still trying to absorb this information and compare it to my notes. I’m wondering if Merrick and Merritt are the same as there are many similarities. Douglass is also a name I have recently become aware of in my lines that marries into Jones/Smith.
My genealogy research time has been severely limited lately due to job change, sick kids and travel, but hope to dig deeper into these connections soon.

I wondered the same about the names Merrick-Merritt. Hard to say, but easily possible the way things go.
Interesting about the Douglass also.

The most recent Douglass in my line is Jane Douglass 1728-1828 born in Halifax Co VA. She married into my Jones line which marries into Smith and then Potter (my grandmother).
Jane Douglass’ parents are listed as James Douglass (1696-1741) and Jane Wilson (1697-1757). James and Jane were Scottish immigrants to Lancaster Pennsylvania. James was born in Edinburgh Jane in Lanark Scotland. Going back further these lines are from Fife Scotland. The Jones line they marry into are all from VA going back to 1680, no info past that.
Don’t know if I mentioned this rule of thumb before… it’s one I picked up from Bill Childs…. two names can differ by one consonant and multiple vowels and still be the same name. Merrick and Merritt certainly fit that rule.
Douglass is a name I had seen others write about before I ever found it in my own lines. Like Sammarroq and Bill Childs. Initially I just had a feeling that people like that may be related to me, as I’ve done more genealogy I’ve found more common surnames like Douglass that support that.
My Merritt DNA cousin also has a Douglass from this era in her line: Anne Douglass (1680-1710) of Middlesex VA. Not able to see any direct connection between all these lines yet though.
There are also common names between my Merritt DNA cousin and the others here that I mentioned like Sammarroq, Sue Janz, and Bill Childs – Tinsley, Rucker, Allen – all from 1700s VA. Chiles/Childs is another name that comes up alongside these. Even though I can’t see exactly how these families connect – there are too many common surnames/locations to be a coincidence, and obviously DNA matches are not a coincidence.
In doing searches and reading other threads I’ve found so many surnames that I have found on my lines with other people here and various name lists. I just don’t know where to start anymore. It seems like there may be connections everywhere. Not just one line but from all of my grandparents. I’m trying to be realistic and not just assume because a name don’t nesessarily mean relation, but it really makes me want to get my dna done even more so to verify things. Especially with all the conflicting records out there. Lines like this one and the Harrells that have multiple names really do seem suspect to native connections.
There are names I shared with Sue I recently noticed in reading old posts. In fact, I have a Marshall as well, I think that was one someone else had as well as you I just noticed. I saw I had two the same as Dreaminghawk as well. Rice was one, can’t recall the other off hand. These names are just everywhere. I have a hard time remembering them and finding them on my tree anymore because I have to go through everyone to find them lol. My tree has better than doubled in the past few months and I’m not familiar with all of them. Many come from other trees as hints and I’m sceptical till proven, but it may take me years to do that. I can’t deny that the signs seem to be pointing me in a stronger connection than I had originally imagined. But I feel like a dreamer saying that. It would be an honor I don’t want to set myself up to lose. I feel obligated to get to the bottom of it, and whatever the end, I can’t be anything but proud of all the people that made me. Indeed, the good, the bad, and the ugly all played a hand in our history and made the beautiful lot we are today. And we should all be proud of the fact that we are living testimonys to a sometimes brutal history, that its a wonder anyone survived. What an honor it is, to carry the torch today, and be able to call this people family, Americans united, as it should have been from the start. The products of that history. Out of ashes the came the people we are today. Like the fire that hardens and binds steel. We can’t be divided. No matter the mix, we are one. As it should be. I love it. Its so much more than history or genealogy, its healing.
