FYI My Mary Harrell is the gg-grandmother of Maude Marshall, my grandfather’s mother who died 8 days after giving birth to him. Her father was Almon C Marshall (1858-1939) of Johsnon Co Indiana, her grandfather Dr Jacob A Marshall (1826-1891) of Caroll Co Ohio. Past that it is sketchy, but we continue to research primary sources.

My tree has better than doubled in the past few months and I’m not familiar with all of them. Many come from other trees as hints and I’m sceptical till proven, but it may take me years to do that.
One thing I did that helped when I got confused was to use maps like this listing the surnames by county. Before doing this the counties listed in my genealogy were a blur to me. After mapping it like this I realized things like… all my ancestors in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky were very close geographically, even neighboring although they were in different States. Also I could see all my ancestors from North Carolina came from counties in the North Central part of the state. Going back that far it helps to get an historic county map more than a modern day one. I also listed what decades these families were there on my maps which helped me compare with others much more quickly. I did this for IN, OH, WV, VA, NC, SC, KY, TN and PAseeker;37789 wrote: I can’t deny that the signs seem to be pointing me in a stronger connection than I had originally imagined. But I feel like a dreamer saying that. It would be an honor I don’t want to set myself up to lose. I feel obligated to get to the bottom of it, and whatever the end, I can’t be anything but proud of all the people that made me.
Coming here I was researching the ancestry of my grandmother’s grandfather. Come to find out I share common ancestors on my grandfather’s side (which I wasn’t even looking on) with people here like Linda and people in other Saponi forums. I also found several connections on my grandmother’s other lines. To me this proves how distinct a community this is.

It really is. My mother’s grandparents (Marshall, Potter, Smith) were all gone before she was born, and she was the first of her generation. They never had a chance to pass information directly. Everything happens for a reason though, even the bad and ugly. From all that loss came a huge will to better understand our identity. It has taken decades, from my mother and myself, but now we have a much better understanding that can be passed to my daughters. That gives me a great sense of peace.

“Rice
My line is Rachel Rice married Robert Tally on 2-9-1791 in present day Warren co,NC. I have her as daughter of Joseph Rice of Prince Edward co,VA and he is son of Thomas Rice of VA. I have not personally proved her father and grandfather.”
I’ve posted so much I don’t recall if I already mentioned the Rice name, but what I have from trees marries into my Lippincott line. Elizabeth Rice Lane b1743 Coventry RI, d1825 Somerset PA, married my Samuel Lippincott b1721 Monmouth NJ d1819 Westmoreland PA. Her folks said to be Richard Rice b1712 Kent RI, and Sarah Kee 1709 Con. Richards father Randall Rice b1677 Kent RI. I have no idea if they would be relation. These are on my Moms Moms side.
Other names I have in common with you are Green, Walker, and Miller.
John Miller appears to be born in England 1600 and dies 1616 Mass. His daughter Mehitable marries John Crowell.
I was going to post which side they are on, but Ive lost them already by the time I got to that. Seriously cant figure where they were. Duh moment.
The hints Im getting for Richard Green b 1655 appear to set him born in England, conflicting death dates 1722-28.
His son Samuel Green b.1671, d.1760 both in Sussex NJ, marries Sarah Bull b.1680 NJ d.1738 NJ. End with their daughter
that marries Severns of NJ, then to PA marries Rue, marries into Butlers and Hortons of VA to name a few. This line and names comes down my Dads Moms side.
I think I covered the Walker in this thread, but goes to a Peter born 1620 in probably England and dies 1696 in Accomack VA, his son Daniel Walker b.1642 Accomack VA and d.1702 Talbot MD. That name ends with his daughter Jane b.1669 MD who marries John Merrick b.1668 MD.
Good idea MarcSnelling on the maps and time frames. I need to do that. among other things…
I wish I had a wall to cover with it, and look at it that way. I feel like Im looking at an Elephant through a microscope. Enough to make you cross eyed. lol
I think I covered the Marshalls in this thread also, they are much closer in generations, and I know little of them.
John Marshall b.1780 and dies in Harrison WV, all I have for parents of Louisa Marshall b.1806 VA who marries
Levi Atmore-Atmur b.1801 VA. Trees say Levi was born in Harrison, Charles, Virginia. Ive yet to find anything to verify that. This thread and surnames comes down my moms moms side, where as my Harrell line, comes down my dads dads side.
December 23, 2014 at 6:31 am #37259Ive got Edward Atmer and Mary Douglass marriage 1800 Harrison co WV. Why there is no records for him other than so far that I don’t know…even other trees have nothing on him.
Harrison is a good assumption for Levi birth county, at any rate.

Wonder if your Mary Douglass m.1800 is connected to my Jane Douglass b.1728 Halifax VA? She marries John Jones, their son David Jones marries ‘Sarah’ and their daughter Massa Jones is my 5x g-grandmother on the line with Blackfoot oral history. My other lines that come through Harrison WV are; Walburn/Walborn, and McColley.
The Walburn line has oral history of being mixed from other families, John Walburn m. Catherine McColley Dec 1820 in Harrison WV. These lines are all connected by my grandmother’s mother
Inez ‘Inee’ Louis Smith 1902-1940.
My grandfather’s mother connects to the Miller’s (Mary Ann b. 1807 Pendleton Co WV). My grandfather’s father also has Nay ancestors in Harrison WV in the 1840s.
Maude ‘Maudy’ Marshall 1899-1919

Sorry for the delay Marc. I have much to verify on these lines.
I have placed Mary’s father, (according to trees) Levi in Harrison Co. Levi Douglass was born approx. 1850, but I’ve found conflicting records as to his birth location. Some trees list his father as William Douglas b.1721 (the 3rd who’s grandfather William b.1665 Somerset MD, two unknown surname grandmothers but mother of William 1721 is a Scutt who’s father was John Scutt b.1648 Talbot MD) of Cecil co MD, and mother Mary Anderson b.1727 Somerset MD. They say Levi was born in Cecil Co. MD. Conflicting, other records such as family data collections, AGBI, and US marriage records say he was born in VA, the family data specifically states Prince William, Harrison VA. Levi Douglass died in 1787.
Mary’s mother, Nancy Ann Merrick b.1758 VA (according to trees). Nancys father John Merrick b. 1717 MD seems to be third generation born in US, name origin of England.. According to trees, his grandmother is a Walker, her grandfather Peter Walker listed as born abt 1620 (England?) and died in 1696 Accomack VA. Her other grandfather, John Major about the same birth date and of same location in VA. A Jane Lorrimer, wife of John Major. No wife for Peter yet.
And as stated before, the mother of John Merrick 1717 is listed as Elizabeth Barron who’s family has many conflicting records as to the birth locations of her father John Barron 1650 and mother Elizabeth Dragoo. Trees list Nancy Ann’s mother as Ann Thompson with no other info on her as of yet.
Also still searching for Levi Atmore’s father in law John Marshall b.1780 VA as well as his mystery wife, and father Edward Atmore (Atmur, Atmer) b.1770 VA. Nothing for Atmore’s, but a few Marshalls to pick through.
That’s about as far as I’ve gotten on this, but I did find a rev war soldier grave for a Levi Douglass, no dates to go on but supposedly in Wyoming co WV, which is closer in location to your Douglas’s location, fwiw. I’m not sure if he’s my Levi or if theres another. I wasn’t able to tell a reason for early death of Levi by the records I read through, or location of burial for that matter.
December 23, 2014 at 6:31 am #37497Seeing this Green-Marshall marriage and wondering if they are TechTeach’s or others Greens:
William Hilary Green b.1780 MD – 20 Nov 1855 Cedar Co, Iowa
married Sarah Ann Pitzer 8 Mar 1821 – Licking Co, Ohio
and
married Lydia Marshall (unknown date)
child of Lydia Marshall and William Green – Hillary Green b. 14 Aug 1803 Bracken Co KY.
December 23, 2014 at 6:31 am #37935In doing a search I found a tree that says Mary Anderson born 1727 in Prince William Va. Which is different than what I had seen before.
December 23, 2014 at 6:31 am #37936Similarly, as noted before on the conflicts, searches seem the same saying William Douglass was also born 1710 Fairfax VA. I’m curious as to why all the conflicts.
December 23, 2014 at 6:31 am #37937Most sources say William dies in VA, one I found says he died in Montgomery co NC in 1779.
