There’s an article I wrote about Carrie Buck about ten years ago linked off the home page here.

Had you seen it?

It’s a great article. I recently updated that page and fixed all the broken links to supporting documents.
I took a look at Carrie Buck’s genealogy. Her grandmother was Arithelia Ella Wheat b.1837 Albermarle VA, who married Fleming N Buck, b 1837-38 VA, d.1862 Richmond, Wise, VA. The only other time I have seen the name Wheat is in the genealogy of a Spillman DNA cousin. He matches my mother on a 24.7cM segment that also matches Clovis-Anzick DNA. The Wheat lineage in his line is also in Richmond, Wise, VA. They seem conected to me. If they are it means Carrie Buck is the cousin of my cousin.
Massa Wheat’s grandson marries Elmira Myra Fish b.1810 Lincoln NC. Names that rhyme/have a common element I have noticed in trees with suspected Saponi heritage. Massah Massey, Zedrick Zadock, Elmira Myra, Arithelia Ella. In my tree there is also Massa Massey, and others like Ora Dora, Dora Dorothy. Other common elements seem to be going by nicknames and having middle names that are surnames of female ancestors. Examples in my family are Inez Louise “Inee” Smith, or Dora Moses Cornelius Skinner “Dorrie” Smith.
This Wheat- Spillman line is in Dearborn/Lawrence IN after 1830s removal time. The daughter of Long and Fish marries George Washington Payne b.1836 IN with ancestors out of Orange NC, Pittsylvania VA, etc. Their daughter’s name fits into this pattern – Jemima Jane ‘Jennie’ Payne – very similar to Inez Louise “Inee” Smith (my grandmother’s mother) from the same time in IN.
Spillman maternal ancestors:
Lucy Davis, b. 1748, Prince George’s, Maryland, USA, d. 1829, Columbia, Adair, Kentucky, USA
Massa Wheat marries William Long b.1765 Lancaster PA, their son Henry Long marries Elmira Myra Fish b.1810 Lincoln NC.
July 17, 2015 at 8:19 pm #37585More DNA details… this Spillman cousin (F325091) also matches my uncle on the big segment shared by my mother. (3rd-6th cousin) But there is another shared segment my uncle shares with him that my mother does not have. This DNA segment is also shared by my Smith 1st cousin (2 x removed).
My Smith cousin is 79 years old and lives in FL. She is the only one living from that generation of Indiana Jones/Smith descendants we know. She is the daughter of my g-grandmother’s sister, (so has direct female connection to the line with oral history like my mother.) Her mother was Cora Doris, youngest daugher of Dora MCS ‘Dorrie’ and Bessie (Gates) Smith. My grandmother’s mother was Inez Louise ‘Inee’, their eldest daughter.
Since my Spillman DNA cousin matches both her and my uncle, it proves there is DNA coming from the specific side of my family that has Massa Massey and the Blackfoot oral history.
People remarked that the children of Dorrie and Bessie looked quite different than each other. Some darker complected some lighter. Cora Doris had a twin sister – Dora Dorothy. Cora and Dora who were twin sisters looked so different that people would not see the resemblance.

Inez LouiseJuly 17, 2015 at 8:19 pm #37586Further to this… Dora Smith said he had a fullblood Blackfoot g-grandparent. When I looked at all his g-grandparents I was leaning toward Massa Massey “Mercy” Jones. After being in contact with another branch of the family to provide DNA we talked history. Our line to Dora was broken in the 1940s when his daughter passed, not yet 40 years old, he died soon after. In their family the oral history was more specific. It was a g-grandparent on Dora’s maternal side.
This ruled out Massa Jones who is on his father’s side. It meant it had to be one of the parents of Benjamin Brower b.1817 Preble Co OH, or one of his wife’s parents. There are conflicting genealogies that have arisen in different families. Some of these genealogists seem quite certain this line is 100% European despite the lack of proof. Which surely is a factor in the conflicts. There are as many as four different wives attributed to him and and about a dozen children.
What is certain is that one of Benjamin Brower’s wives was Isabell (Wiley) Buck. Isabell Buck was also married to Theron Buck. Below is the only picture I have from Dora’s maternal line – an unnamed Brower Aunt. The other picture is three generations of descendants from Theron and Isabell Buck. From what I see they look similar enough that it’s plausable Dora’s Aunt Brower and the Buck descendants could be half-relations, and Carrie Buck a cousin on the Buck side going back to VA/NC…
Dora’s Aunt (daughter of Benjamin Brower and Isabell Buck?)
grandson, son, g-grandson of Theron and Isabell (Wiley) Buck
Carrie and mother Emma (Harlow) BuckJuly 17, 2015 at 8:19 pm #37608You can connect to Carrie Buck on paper? The genealogical trail?

No there is no paper trail. Carrie Buck’s mother born 1838 is a brick wall. Her paternal grandfather and grandmother born 1795 & 1808 are brick walls.
I’m just saying it’s possible. Massa Wheat is in the right time and place to be Arthelia’s grandmother or cousin. There seems to be a naming pattern, and common brick wall times/names.
I suspect these are relations to my cousin’s Wheat line – Zadock White 1844-1926 and Mary Agnes Weekley 1853-1908 of Tyler Co WV
