Hi everyone! HaPpY HoLiDaYS!
It has been a lil bit since I have been up on this part of the site.
Anyway Juan and I are going to start on our Cradel board soon, does anybody have any ideas that they might want to share. about going about doing this. Some Elders up here have talked to us about doing more of an Anishenabe style Cradle Board, but wanted some more feed back from my people down that way. The Azteca/Mexica Juans people did not have Cradel boards they had over the sholder kind of cloth pouches. you can actually buy something similar to them at Babie r Us, but we definetly wanted to make a Cradele Board. Sooo any ideas?

It’s nice to know the derivation of those snugglies. They came out right after my baby was a toddler. Just missed them. They look sooooo comfy.
December 8, 2002 at 5:27 pm #6699Hello all, well there’s much to do about cradle boards, really they are a sturdy back board with a “moss bag” attached, so first look into moss bags keep in mind that you have to bind the child in with his or her arms either by its sides or across the chest.
Also believe it or not a hard back board will eventually become a hazard, if you prop up the baby it has the possibilties of falling flat on its face with the weighty board behind, moss bags are soft and you always have to hold on to them unless you have a string to hang them up with.
If you go with a hard backed board type then use a roll bar across the top, you can also use one without but keep it light so that you are not exhausted carrying it.
No doubt the old southerners used hard backed boards some made of river cane or wood slats , try white oak bords and a soft bag, you should be able to make the outer layer so that you can slip the board into the carrier keeping it away from the child by a padded mattress.
There’s lots of ideas out there, but your childs saftey comes first so be careful, our lifestyles have changed a great deal since these were necessary, you may also want to ask the elders in your area to tell you how to string up the babies bed using just a rope and a blanket, all the best Tom.
December 8, 2002 at 5:27 pm #6700I know I saw a photo of an incredibly ornately beaded cradleboard and the impression I got is that it was made as a kind of keepsake, not to serve functionally all that much. You know, it’s not like they were strapping the kid into the car with that. Definitely not something you’d be wiping drool off of. Or letting your baby teeth on. It was more like bronzed baby booties to keep forever.
Is that what you had in mind, Christina?
BTW, when’s my little “niece/nephew” due?
December 8, 2002 at 5:27 pm #6854:p Thanks for the suggestions! One of my friends, a Chippewa girl she is going to nursing school and actually said that you cannot use them for a very long time and they are not good for the babies hips, I think if we actually use the cradleboard it will be when we are at Pow Wows. My concern of using it is definelty the safety of my child first.
but we are very excited and the baby is due on July 1st!
We got to hear the heartbeat the other day and while the doctor had the microphone thing to my stomach the baby kicked,we laughed and he said well it wasnt gas! How embarrasing..
Ii said YEEEA thats my kid kicking at 14 weeks, crazy hahaha
Linda I wanted to ask you the dates of the campout again because if I am off with the baby, I might be able to make it down there, I dont think I will be able to camp but if there are other accomidations in the area it might be possible for me and Juan to come down.
If it is before the due date I doubt I will be making it down but if it a few weeks in to July I might be able to
December 8, 2002 at 5:27 pm #6859It’s the third weekend in JUNE. Well, I hope you go to term, but if you’re a few weeks early, maybe you can make it. There are lots of motels in the area.
December 8, 2002 at 5:27 pm #6880Just my luck that will probably be the week I have the baby.
Bummer
