My Lynch Great Grandmother(Grandfather’s mother) always told us that her Grandfather was Cherokee and now doing research on that family, I have hit a brick wall on him. I can not find any birth records, no father or mother, his name given is Joseph Lynch B.1792 Meherrin, Brunswick County VA
Also, on my Mother’s mother’s side, 3rd great grandfather George A Guy 1810 no proof on where he was born but some say Brunswick County others say Accomack VA. He is listed as black or Mulatto in census records, there seems to be a Catawba connection, but I can not find any proof. His wife (no proof of marriage) was a Elizabeth (Betsy) Barnett B1812, all her children went by Barnett not Guy, she and all her children are listed as Mulatto on census. George Guy is on the marriage certificate of my 2nd great grandmother Virginia Barnett-Guy (1844), as her father. I am looking anyone that may be able to help, I do believe they are my Native ancestors just going by what was told in my family. Where do I start to find out more about them?I am a bit rusty on all this, but if memory serves you are mentioning names and places the Occaneechi Saponi used in their bid for state recognition. You might want to look in that direction. I would think the material they submitted is public record. Unless your family has lived around Hillsboro NC since forever, you won’t be admitted to their tribe, but if it’s just closure you want on these family secrets and mysteries, go for it.
I am not looking to be admitted to the tribe, I have only 10% of the DNA markers. I am only looking to find my family history and secrets as you rightly called them. I have traced almost every other family name and I want to know those Grandparents roots also. My family has been in Brunswick County VA since the early 1700, which of course is where Fort Christanna was on the Meherrin River, about 10 miles from where I live now.
