May Genealogy of Pike Co. Ky; John’s Creek is where Meredith Collins owned a strip of land along John’s Creek 10 miles wide and 30 miles long. This land was sold to Harrison Newsome.
Josephine Fields has preserved the tradition that the knoll overlooking Abbott Shoal, on which Samuel erected his house, was once the site of a Totero Indian village. According to Willard Rouse Jillson, the word “toteroy” signifies “river of sandbars.” He points out that on Evans’ Map of Virginia, published in 1755, the Big Sandy is labeled “Tottery or Big Sandy C.” We know that the Toteros were living on the river in 1699, for in that year they were mentioned in the correspondence of Richard Coote, the Earl of Bellomont and Governor of New York Colony. According to Henry Scalf, the tribe had a village near Hager Hill, one at Cliff, and one on Johns Creek near modern-day McCombs. Daniel Boone s visit to the area by
approximately two decades.
Gist discovered an Indian village on
what is believed to be a tributary of the Pound
River in Wise Co., VA. These Indians lived in
log cabins, a fact that puzzled explorers
because it was a most unusual form of lodging
for the Nomadic customs of the area. The
Indians tribal symbol was the crane and
pictures of the bird were carved on the door
post and painted at various locations
throughout the camp. The chief was called
Chief Crane.
Any ideas what tribe this is…..?

Wise County, Va is included in the area claimed by the Cherokee prior to the Rev. War (according to James Mooney’s map). No information on any settlement by them in that area however. The Cherokee did build log houses. The Cherokee did/do have a Bird Clan but it was formed (also according to Mooney) by the merging of the Turtledove and Raven clans sometime in the very distant past.
