While looking for another surname (Colbert, which led me to James Logan, which led me to this website) I stumbled on the following accidently — it also mentions a Col. Byrd.
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/greybird7/genealogy.html
— quote —
“On the south side of the James below the mountains the frontier at this time was represented by the Welsh settlement on the Mcherrin; Col.BYRD’s improvements on the Roanoke above Sandy Creek, including the three charming islands, Sapponi, Occoneechee and Totero; Major MUNFORD’s Quarter near-by; Col.BYRD’s Land of Eden on the Dan and Major MAYO’s Survey adjoining; Richard and William KENNON’s grant on Cub Creek which supplied farmsteads for John CALDWELL’s Presbyterian Colony…
— end of quote —
it mentions a Col Byrd near Saponi, Tutero and Occoneechee island settlements on the Dan River.
vance
ps — now I wonder what “Col.BYRD’s Land of Eden on the Dan” is and what is it referring to??

No kidding! Wow! It does sound intriguing. And a Byrd connected to Saponi, etc. I’ve GOT to trace this guy. And the Mr. Bird who married Sarah (Sally Wimberly, from Bertie Co.) It would be quite a coincidence if the Joel Bird who helped Quinney and Zachariah marry is unrelated to them, and unrelated to the Bird who married Sarah. Especially when Z and Q’s first born son is named Lewis, and Lewis is Sarah’s father. Sigh. But every official record I’ve found for Bertie and Wake (and Cumberland and Edgecombe, ) doesn’t have them on it. Any other ideas on this one? ( I AM beginning to figure out at least what I need to find. Sally and Bird’s marriage record or a land deed with both names on it in the right counties. A record of them being in Wake. A will. Even some proof that Stephen Vaughan is really Quinney’s dad. )
Thank you for thinking of my Byrd/Birds when you came across that!

Col. William Byrd’s Observations 1728-33
A Self-Guided Tour Of Pittsylvania County’s Southern Border
The very earliest first-hand accounts of present-day Pittsylvania County are found in the famous writings of Col. William Byrd. Byrd led a surveying party to mark the line between Virginia and North Carolina in 1728, then returned in 1733 through the same area en route to land he was granted in payment for the survey, which he named “Eden” (North Carolina), immediately to the south and southwest of Pittsylvania County. Both of his journeys were faithfully recorded in his diaries, now known and often-reprinted as William Byrd’s Histories of the Dividing Line Betwixt Virginia and North Carolina and A Journey to the Land of Eden.

ps — article has a reference to a Saponi Indian guide named Bearskin, and there is a historic marker mentioning the Saponi religious beliefs, altho I wonder if they got it right . . .
August 28, 2004 at 9:12 pm #10951I’ve taken a look at some of his stuff and have spent more time trying to find if he is ancestor to my Byrd/Birds but can’t tell yet. He’s certainly in the right area! All the folks I’m supposed to be related to on that line — Vaughans, Dances and of course my Wimberleys (as well as some of the names you gave me that are a bit more distant, such as the Greens) ALL seem to be on that border or cross from Virginia to North Carolina. Thanks again!
