I recently came across a program called “Adopt an Elder”. It was regarding adopting an elder on a reservation (sending aid, money, assistance ect…) Does anyone have any additional information regarding this program or a “Good” Contact? Please let me know?

If you are looking for a place to offer some help, you could donate to “http://www.re-member.org” I can vouch for them. I have gone out to Pine Ridge for the last 4 years as a volunteer for Re-Member. This organization renovates homes of elders, disabled, and families on Pine Ridge. They are delivering propane now. There is a critical shortage there right now. In the spring, they will begin their season of hosting volunteers (I am going again in March.) who will help with the rehab. They have a facebook page too that you can search for.
There is also a group that works there, http:http://www.friendsofpineridgereservation.org that helps collect donations for the reservation. I am on their yahoogroup and have sent things out there for the women’s abuse shelter and the schools.

I will forward this information to my family so that we can also start assisting. I do know that my mother & I had discussed also possibly becoming active in providing support and assistance to the Pine Ridge Reservation as well.

We take student volunteers in the spring, along with donations. We load up our travel trailer and pull it out there. Re-Member used to build beds but have expanded to home rehab, so they need building supplies or monetary support to pay for the supplies. Last spring, we rehabbed a really bad trailer for a Lakota young man who was a recovering alcoholic. When the trailer could be lived in, he was to get his children back, so we worked on skirting the trailer, putting in insulation, adding electricity, a hot water heater, etc. It is one of the most rewarding things I do, actually the most rewarding. You know that with every screw you put in, you are changing lives.

I am glad that this got posted. With my move to Virginia from Florida, I am reminded how it feels to be cold, so I am sending a donantion for the propane fund in tomorrow’s mail.
I poked around the http://friendsofpineridgereservation.org website and after a few minutes felt like crying, so much need and so little help.
I am currently reading Stephen Ambrose’s Crazy Horse an Custer. Hope all are well and enjoying the new year.
I don’t want to hijack this thread but Becky and I have “adopted” an elderly Indian couple right here in NC. Their house is in great need of repair. I am a carpenter so doing the work was not a problem but we didn’t have the resources to buy materials. Becky did some research and found some federal funds through Rural Development. They offer very low interest loans for the poor and elderly. (Becky can give details if anyone is interested) We walked them through the loan process with Dept of Agriculture. You can get up to $7500 without collateral. The RD rep writes the checks and oversees the work so the elderly will not get cheated. With this backing and a Lowes acct, we are currently making these repairs. I agree with Techteach that what you do “hands on” is very rewarding. I’m sure we all know people right at home who are in need of a helping hand. If anyone wants to pursue this avenue, we can take it to a new thread.

It always makes me smile to see people reaching out…the elderly and children are especially dear to my heart:) I think wherever and however people choose to bless others is very commendable…so be a blessing!! It is awesome to hear how people choose to help…we have been helping financially, with fundraisers, etc a program for abused children…Blessings All,
