Hello, I am of melungeon desc on my mothers side. There is also mention of a grgrgruncle Alford Ison who was said to be blackfoot indian they were from Va. Other surnames are Minor, Sizemore, Roberts, Anderson, Stamper,Meece. I always thought is strange that there was blackfoot in VA. I also believe the Melungeon origins are in the Saponi. They also called themselves Black Dutch Irish. Interesting mix ! I know now what it means. Would love to exchange info

October 13, 2002 at 12:02 am #6335Minor could be a variant of Maynor, I would think. Where’s Coharie Roy these days? He might know about that name.
Sizemore is listed as associated with Saponi/Creek families. Roberts is listed as associated with Tuscarora families. Anderson occurs among Saponi families. Four out of seven is quite a score!
Since my theory is that the VA Blackfoot ID’s refer to the Sissipaha tribe who were Saponi, in the generic sense, speaking for all the Eastern Siouan people of the Piedmont, I would say you’ve got plenty of indication to explain that Blackfoot ID.
Actually, my understanding is that it’s the other way around — there are Saponi origins to some melungeon groups.
My second cousin, with the same kind of VA NDN lines, was told they were Black Dutch.
October 13, 2002 at 12:02 am #9535Hi just read your post.
Anything concerning Melungeon or Sizemore piques my interest. So naturally I read on. Then I noticed the Anderson name. My maiden name was Anderson and it has always been said the Anderson surname was Sweed or Scott.
Mahala Sizemore was my ggg grandmother. Ware is also a Melungeon name. Mahala had a grt grandson, my grandfather on moms side was Owen Edward Ware. Owen a name that is an early Sizemore name. One I believe to of been a last name from one of the Sizemore wives, Mary possibly.
If I can help in anyway, pls let me know.
Good Luck

October 13, 2002 at 12:02 am #9561We saw a SIZEMORE in the Red Mountain church cemetery today. I remember that she was one of the older markers (born around 1850, maybe) and she was married to a SATTERWHITE. Didn’t write down anything today……. coming from a family reunion and just decided to check the cemetery.
