Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Saponitown-All!
My Welsh progenitor is Ambrose Williams b. 1725-30.
While researching VA, I found a Land Record for an Ambrose Williams who was in Col. John Bannister’s Rev. War Regiment. Searching in various areas in VA, I found his land to be half on the Nottaway/Cheroenhaka Circle Tract Reserve and half on lands of VA. I have found nothing else in that area to suggest if he might have been NA or if he was White and bought his land from the Tribe??
Another mysterious Ambrose Williams is reported to be the son of Chief Nitachachee but this is very confusing and several generations down from Ambrose Williams, our progenitor. Apparently, this Ambrose Williams’ mother may have died and he was raised by his White unknown grandmother in TN who was probably a Williams??. This Ambrose’s siblings go by various surnames other than Williams. Chief Nitachachee and Ambrose signed the Choctaw Treaty of Dancing Rabbit in the early 1830’s giving up their land in MS and removing to Oklahoma.
My father was born in the old Choctaw Nation/Indian Territory as well as my Williams grandfather. My Grandfather was Cherokee.
Does anyone know any Williams of the Cheroenhaka Tribe? I would like to compare notes with them.

PS: More to come – hope I’m not overwhelming!!!!
