This event was held 3/30/2013 from 1-3PM at Piedmont Virginia Community College,Albemarle County (Charlottesville) ,VA
Event was organized by a 16 yr old high school student,Ms. Gillispie (Lakota). (Forgot her 1st name.) Special guest dancers were Red Crooked Sky from the Tidewater area of VA.
Small event;probably 80-100 people there.
One thing that made an impression with me was when the lead dancer,Mr. Garneaux (Lakota),mentioned that people always ask him what “NDNs” look like. He answered that ? by asking all of us Native descendants to stand up. About 20-25% of the audience (myself included) stood up,whereupon he shouted,”That’s what NDNs look like!” I haven’t seen that % of Native participation in any Native events I’ve attended in VA. If anyone from here was there,I was the guy who enthusiastically waved my right fist in a circle when Mr.Garneaux gave the shout out. Made me feel proud to be of Native descent.
There was a brief intermission. I met other NDNs descended from various nations,Blackfeet (Montana/Canada),Upper Mattaponi,Lakota,Catawba, among others.
I hope this event is not a one-timer. I’d love to go back next year!

April 11, 2013 at 3:46 pm #36181Hello, I haven’t been on this forum in a few years and am trying to get back into my research. Where there not a lot of representatives of the VA Native peoples there( ie pamunkey, Nansemond etc)?

Charles,
There were a few people there from VA nations. I did speak to an Upper Mattaponi woman and I guess there probably were other VA Indian nations represented.
But you have to remember that most of the tribes are in Eastern VA. (Tidewater) Albemarle CO (Charlottesville) is in Central VA. It probably would have taken some of them 2-3 hours to get over to Piedmont Virginia CC.
Also, the event wasn’t very well publicized. I only found out less than a week before it was to have taken place.
