Recently started charting the Charles Hunter & Carrie Ann Clark Hartless family tree originating in Amherst & Rockbridge Counties in VA. Am running into the names Clark, Tyree, Floyd, Robinson like crazy! Have been given some indication that there may be a Monacan Indian connection. Any pointers on where I should be looking to see if this is true?
September 19, 2007 at 3:51 am #28429Those counties are not at all close together — of the two, I’d think Rockbridge much more likely, if you are looking specifically for Monacans. I think that tribe (or community) was historically identified around Appomattox, someplace. They still have a tribal organization, and some presence on the Web. In Amherst the Saponi or Eastern Siouan folks aren’t well documented, except as transients — some Indian people were local, historically, but I think they would be of Algonkian stock.
A couple of families you might check out (by using the Search feature on this forum) are Chiles and Harralson, both of which are spelled various ways. They lived in the upper part of the county, now Louisa County (and Lake Anna). They seem to have been mixed blood by the time they left Amherst County. Later, and farther south, they were partly Siouan — at least in certain branches. I’m not sure their early Amherst connection with Indian people has been proven to be with Siouans. Maybe. If so, and if your family also lived in upper (northwestern) Amherst — now Louisa — that would be a place to look, anyhow.
There are also lists of Monacan family names on the forum, but the documentation of most of them derives from the mid nineteenth century, or even later.

September 19, 2007 at 3:51 am #35602My great grandparents, John and Melinda Hartless, were from Rockbridge County in Virginia. I have been doing genealogy research intermittenly for years with very little success. The last of the full bloods I knew was my Aunt Maggie and she died in the early 80s, I believe. Would you be interested in sharing information?
