Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Our family has been told that my husband’s grandfather, Clayton Howe, had a mother who was a Blackfoot Indian. All official records name Clayton’s mother as Catherine Bergey Anderson. I have traced the Bergey family for many generations and find no mention of an Indian ancestry.
Catherine’s father was John Anderson (1793-1863)who married Susanna Shantz Bergey. They lived in Montgomery Co. ,PA.
John’s father was William Anderson (1755-1824) and married Elizabeth Grimley. I have no place of birth or death for William but Grimley is a Montg. Co., Pa name. I can furnish names of siblings for both families if it would be helpful. I have been unable to trace the Anderson family beyond Wlliam.
Because of the Saponi link with Blackfoot and the fact that Anderson is a name linked with Saponi, I believe this might be the link I need.
Does anyone have my John or William Anderson in their ancestry?
Thank you,
Betty Howe
Hi Betty,
Do not recognize your Anderson.
Am wondering if it might be a good idea for us Andersons to post whatever we have in one thread. If not this one, then we could start another.
Whatchy’all think?
Hey Bealeef,
I do not think I ever realized you have Andersons too. I think a thread would be great. I find it interesting that my Andersons also claim Blackfeet, one of the reasons I am here also becasue they were from the southeast, were never farther than KY. I have Andersons on both sides of my family. The above names are not familiar but I will check and see what I have.:p
