I know this question has probably been asked dozens of times, but as I am fairly new to this site, I am going to ask again. Where would be the best place to get DNA testing done to find out what percentage of N/A I am. My connection would be on my Dad’s side of the family. The connection would be his GrGrandmother on his Mother’s Dad’s side and also on his Mother’s Gr Grandfather’s side. I had heard that the test has to be done by a male in the family (I’m female). Also, can it tell what tribe or just what percentage N/A if any you are? I don’t want to invest in this if it won’t show anything. Thanks for any help or info you can supply. I hope this makes sense and thanks for any help someone can give me.
February 16, 2011 at 11:58 pm #35784Littlebear,
I’ve had several batteries of DNA tests done, the latest set in November by 23 and Me.
The Y chromosome passes from father to son without change. The Y has haplogroups corresponding with different world regions.
The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is given by a mother to all her children. The mtDNA also has its haplogroups.
Be aware that these two tests are only tracking one ancestor per generation.
There are autosomal tests (ancestry by DNA,ancestry painting) that estimate one’s % of continental ancestries.
23 and Me uses 3 reference categories: European,African,Asian. They claim that FB Native Americans test as 75% Asian,25%European,give or take 10% either direction.
Ancestry painting is not sophisticated enough to delineate one’s NA tribe. Even if it did,it’s would be too late for me,there being no FB Pamunkey.
If one’s of European and Native American background,23 and Me has a calculator to estimate
how far back one may have had a FB Native American ancestor. It doesn’t work for me or others
with significant African ancestry.
One interesting feature 23 and Me has is Relative Finder@. They match people up by DNA similarity showing estimated cousin range (ex: 3-7 cousin) and most likely relationship (ex: 4th
cousin). I don’t know how they do that! I have 148 DNA cousins on that site, most are estimated to be 4th-5th cousins.
Check out my blog on Saponitown where I talk more about my experience with 23 and Me.

P.S.-They’re running a sale now.
February 16, 2011 at 11:58 pm #35785I used Familytree DNA and Genetree autosomal test. The Genetree test was done several years ago, as I have mixed lines. The % of NA matched what genealogy hints at. At Familytree, I started with mtDNA, added additional markers, as standard mtDNA can show matches thousands of years back. Now, I only check mtDNA matches if they match all markers. I added the Familyfinder test which matches both male and female sides of the family and was able to find one cousin. I have several matches but we can’t determine how, although as my ancestry.com tree has expanded, I am starting to find where many of the matches likely link.

February 16, 2011 at 11:58 pm #35788well and something that most people don’t know and don’t seem to understand by experience or common sense or understandings of clan type lineage is what it is only what they are recording and what it means to them .
ok
in animal dna TESTING they are only checking for the genes that are changing genes.
genes that make one animal different than the next animal.. . these genes are all really only controlled by the male Y lines .. yes in animals they test way fewer sites and genes but it is still based on the same concept no matter how many genes they test.
my friend and I have bred our animals By a native idea of clan lines now for years and years and know exactly what a male line does to each female line in each breed.. and all breeds have the same females lines.
and there are 4 white buck saanen type color/spot errect ears.. and droopy years and no ear and all white errect year..
but it is clear who white buck is in each breed. and not any traces of any of the females line can be found.
what this mean is go look in the mirror, do you look very native? if not dont’ look very very native don’t bother save your money, gosh save a few years of your life. and a lot of fighting and nastiness on all sides.
so they have quite a gimick going.. they pull males who look native to them and say
so since north eastern tribes trace by female lines what will these all come out as what ever the fathers line was if it is Q or C only ?
since someplace in the 50% of the native males are haplogroup R these all come back as highly euro of course. as they claim these are all late coming euro lines. but they also have Q and C in good quantities in europe and MT DNA C AND B IN EUROPE and a few more they won’t talk about. but when those mtdna are in europe they then tell those europeans that they are native americans…
they cherry pick the data to read what they want it too.. or they are totally ignorant of how things work in real time. and it that way into the computers by cherry picking what is they will label as native “dna ” which always will fall into those two male haplogroups and their direct offspring that IS IT.. anything else they find will just be noise and you sir will be laughed into the next century. really don’t trust it until they make some major changes in their theory of native history. because they are clueless suckers..
so in actuality the dna tests will only see the direct male line type. so if that aint the one you want to find.. don’t bother, it is gimmick and it is all based on stereotyping of american people as east asians, even to the point of using ” china lake” as some of their Adna. check out what was going on at china lake on canadian border, they use this type of dna to “Prove” bering straits.
so what does that say if they have to use chinese railroad workers/ miners to prove their origin theories .. then tell me it isn’t fixed to prove what they want us to be.
because they will not find your female lines as they do not show up . not with what they currently are doing.
February 16, 2011 at 11:58 pm #35790If you have enough information on any subject, you can rearrange the information to give you just about any statistics you want. Especially when you make the rules! Reminds me of the old phrase “I’m from the government, I’m here to help you”….Into oblivion!
February 16, 2011 at 11:58 pm #35791yes wasn’t it rogers who said there is “lies ,damn lies and then statistics”
yes they got one big gimmick conjob going and the sad part is that those now “educated” by them.. indians believe their theories , I guess too much has been lost and even less still believed. . quite a racket they got .
you see some who are looking asian will never prove anyone ever came from asia.
so the foundations of their basic theory is wrong and until they get the theory right they can’t really explain to anyone anything and they will only find what they hope to.
the foundations of their theory is wrong and untill they listen to what is recorded and what the old ones did say and stop reading stuff into it , they will remain clueless and pushy but mostly just wrong.
