The annual eastern Siouan campout is coming up in a little more than a month, so here’s the details. The main dates are June 25 and 26th, Saturday and Sunday.
Most of the action has always been on that Saturday, though I will be there from Thursday through Monday, I believe. I need to pull out my reservation to confirm that.
To reserve a campspace go to this site, Reserve America and pick out a spot in the A1-26 area. We already have A12 and A13, right on the beach. There’s lots of room there for a large group of people to hang out, so reserve a nearby space for your tent, but plan on spending the day with the group on the beach.
If you don’t live too far from North Bend Park, VA (the closest town is Boydton, VA) come and stay for the day. They let you in for $2 per car, maybe it’s per head, but I believe it’s per carload.
What I would like to see us do is to try to move this event in the direction of a Green Corn celebration. I’m hoping we can get some Tutelo singing and dancing going in the moonlight, on the water’s edge. If anyone knows an elements of this we could reasonably work in and do justice to, please let me know.
In year’s past we’ve had various ambitions, like craft-making workshops, other times we’ve had more structured meetings with agendas to discuss. In reality, it’s a breathtakingly beautiful place to just enjoy and relax, and help us to grasp what a paradise our people had back in the day when they lived on islands in this river. Can you imagine what a grand time summers were back then?
Just bringing this forward so everybody gets the message the campout is upcoming. If you live in NC or VA, please plan on coming for the day on Saturday. That’s when most of the people are there. We always have a wonderful time. Come and enjoy the million dollar views for 2 bucks a carload.
I will be there and my family. Saponi1 I believe is coming. Felicia is coming. Bill Childs and Vance Hawkins are coming. Then there will be a number of local Indian people who come, some are VA Siouan like us, and some of from various local tribes. I’ll be there from Thursday on, but most people, who are local, come for the day on Saturday. We have a nice gathering then. And we have an all round good time soaking up the beautiful summertime on the lakeshore, with a panoramic view of lake and woods, nothing man made in sight. Cool breezes, nary a bug.
Hey All…we hope to make it up for the day on Saturday as well. I had to fight with our HR person to get the day off (was supposed to be my weekend off anyway). Looking forward to kicking back after inventory week….and go down to the ole swimming hole…and yes, Bill, I will bring brownies, again…..and Rose, I will have your picture.
Becky and I had a wonderful time at the campout saturday. Becky did say it was probably a good thing that Bill and Vance and I did live so far apart, or I would talk all the time and not do anything else. 😉 You could add Rick to that mix, too.
Linda, Thank you for all you do. I’m not sure everyone appreciates just how special you are and how much you do. Thank you.
As always, the drum touched my core and reminded me that we are all one. May the descendents of the diaspora of the eastern tribes continue to grow in numbers and strength.
Mark & I had a wonderful time as well. It was a pleasure to meet so many of you and was the perfect way for an introvert like me to meet new people. 🙂

Just figured I would add my two cents…..I thoroughly enjoyed the day Saturday…it was a pleasure to see and talk to everyone. And it was nice to pass on the history and knowledge to the next generation that accompanied me….my son. He also enjoyed sitting and listening to all…and I appreciate him providing the technical support for the slide show. Hope all made it home safely….keep having fun…as we will…Becky
I too had a wonderful time. Linda dito on you being so special. You exude love and kindness in the true sense. I have felt like family since the first time I met you and Barry. Thank you all for allowing me in to your hearts and allowing me to share in the celebration of our heritage.
It was so good to meet everyone that was there I did not know. But somehow we all knew each other many years in the spirit.

Linda, while we were gabbing you were quietly behind the scenes doing EVERYTHING — thanks.
When I was a child I remember going to the Richey family reunion and meeting relatives I barely knew, and leaving them with knowing my cousins, second cousins, et cetera, a litle better, maybe feelin a little sore from swimming, hiking, maybe a little good natured wrestling around, and so forth. This had that “feel”, sort of like a family reunion.
It is a unique feeling to have people you’d never met treat you like family. That is an unusual and rare gift.
Hope all got home okay.

I had a wonderful time talking, swimming, singing, trying to Stomp dance (no laughing Vance), and feeling the spirit again. The area does something to you that is hard to put into words. All I know is that it makes me feel sooo peaceful and a sense of being at home again. It calls to me (moves me). I am always eager to go to this special place anytime.
Vance, my family loves you come over again to the house, and this time I can watch you dance (lol)!!!!

Felicia, visiting your family was a lot like visiting a relative. I especially enjoyed talking to your father about his garden. Made me feel right at home. 🙂 Tell your mother that tuna salad was very good.
And those peach trees — I just love the smell of them as the peaches are ripening. I used to have several peach trees and hope to again. But my grandparents had many peach trees on their farm and growing up we usually had one or 2. Even that barnyard odor reminded me of my uncle’s farms . . . my one regret is I didn’t get to meet your dogs.
As for you, well you’r just “a little bit” crazy, aren’t ya? . . . now I mean that in a “good” way. 🙂
