Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself. I am new here; just recently found this site. I have been researching my Austin line for about 15 years, now.
I knew we were descended from John Austin Sr and a Saponi wife,but, after researching a bit, I gave up on finding any Saponi connection. I am thrilled to find this group! My dream is to one day be enrolled as a legal Native American. I know, it’s a dream…. my g grandmother supposedly had some Cherokee, but it has yet to be proven.
Anyway, my line is from John Austin’s son.. John Jr

Ed, I descend from Charles I , Charles II,Richard, Robert,Hezekiah, William Howard, Howard Jefferson, then Howard’s daughter,Pearl, was my grandmother. My Yancey’s ended up in Clay Co,AR. Ok.. our lines seem to split at Richard Yancey, son of Charles II.
My ancestry is through Richard’s wife, Ann Temperance ( He had two wives). Their son, Robert, married Philadelphia Jones. 11 children later, their son, Hezekiah became the father of William Howard Yancey, who was living in TN during the War. I have a partial copy of a letter he wrote to his son, my g g grandfather, Howard Jefferson Yancey, who fought in Davies Battalion during the War, from AR. William also had 11 children. Howard moved from TN to Clay Co ,AR. Howard married Mary Cawood(Keywood) and had 8 children. My dad is named for this Howard Yancey. One of Howard’s sons, William Stephen Yancey, was the father of Pearl Yancey Austin, my grandmother. I have done extensive research on this line, thankfully much my information was donated by other wonderful family members who had also researched before me.
Hi Linda, always so good to see that smiling face ! One of the great joys of family research is hitting those bumps in the road where the families have continualy inter married and done so repeatedly over generations. Such is our situation among the Yancey’s and the Buchanan’s and then between the two families. These Mecklenburg families pulled this little jaunt so many times you couldn’t have a family reunion unless it was the Buchanan-Yancey reunion. We had so many “cousins’ SO MANY TIMES REMOVED it was just easier to conclude we were our own Grandpa and leave it at that. We have a close friend here at the NC coast who is actually a Cherokee plus other tribal affiliations from Oklahoma. He arrived down here near Jacksonville NC in the military and married a local girl. We too are imported here from Granville Co. NC and Halifax and Mecklenburg Co Va. affiliations. He just found out he too is a descendant of Richard Yancey and Mary Leighton. Ed

Hi! I had never heard the term Saponi until a few days ago. I was working on my family tree, trying to trace my Native heritage on my mom’s side (Johnson), when I stumbled upon this site. John Austin and the “unknown Indian woman” are my ancestors, too. John Austin Sr’s gggGranddaughter Lucy Austin(Andrew’s daughter) married Elisha Johnson. His son, Noah Johnson(my ggUncle) is listed on the Dawes roll as Creek Indian. I’m trying to figure out…did some of our Saponi ancestors join in with the Creek tribe somewhere? I am so confused. Any suggestions on how to figure things out would be greatly appreciated. Other than this one relative(Noah), I have no other documentation of anyone living on Indian territory. Just wondering if any other John Austin descendants out there were having the same problem. THanks!
