Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
This Saturday there’s a Living Village in Hillsborough, NC. It starts about 11, I believe, until dusk. Find the courthouse and government complex and you’ll see signs directing you to the village. We always thoroughly enjoy these events. It’s very surprising how you walk a block away from the center of town and it’s suddenly hidden from view and you think you’ve stepped back in time 300 years. It really is something to see, and a remarkable effort. Mostly a labor of love.
We’re not exactly period correct at re-enacting, but the village is, and there are a few people, anyway, like Bill and Susie Gingriss, who are thoroughly versed on Native tech. Susie cooks up a storm on an open firepit, while Bill is napping arrowheads. One genltman weaves baskets. I might try my hand a coiling a pot, if I can find the clay. I’ll cheat and use commercial clay. I hear digging your own
and tempering it is no small undertaking.
There’s dancing and drumming all day long and there’s a much different feel to it than pow wows. Í don’t know. Maybe I said this before, but sitting next to the banks of the Eno, where half a dozen Saponi sites are known to have stood, within a few miles of that spot, listening to the drums echo off the high bank of the river, the mood is very intense. You do feel in touch.
Hope to see some of you there.
