Hi folks, I’ll be visiting relatives in Durham and Greensboro NC in June and was wondering if any one knows of any pow wows in the area on Sunday, June 13? I don’t trust the internet powwow sites, they have been known to be wrong, and I’m travelling from afar. Thought folks here would be good to ask since thats Saponi country. I don’t care what kind of pow wow it is, I just like to dance.
Thanks,
Shad
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9393You’ll just miss the Occaneechi-Saponi Pow-wow June 11 & 12 in Hillsborough
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9394Some of us from here will be at that pow wow. If you can move your arrival up a frew days, let me know so we can rendevous.
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9396If I remember correctly, Hillsborough is between Durham and Greensboro, right? I had been planning on getting to Durham that Saturday night, June 12, I’ll see if I can get another day of leave so I could get there Friday. Does that pow wow run late Friday night, or is it just a daytime event?
Thanks,
Shad
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9397I believe it runs late Friday. I’ll probably just be going Saturday.
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9403We usually wrap up around 9 or so on Friday
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9406I hope you can make it. We should all rendezvous together…this will be the anniversary of the first pow wow that Dreaminghawk and I attended together. I felt so much at home and welcomed. Looking forward to seeing all of you there.
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9603Looks like I’ll be able to make the Occaneechi-Saponi pow wow on june 12th after all. I’d be interested in meeting new folks, as I’ll be by myself (my relatives are a bit to old for pow wowing.) I have never pow wowed in your area before, so I’ll probably stick out like a sore thumb. Fell free to e-mail me at my personal address.
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9688Hopefully, my work schedule will allow us to attend both Friday and Saturday. And you can’t feel out of place there…last year was my first pow wow ever…and John made me feel quite at home. Looking forward to meeting up with you.
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9691I’d be glad to meet you. I’ll be in my shell dress. I figure if I’m coming from cross country, I might as well dress up proper and enjoy dancing! (I’ll also be missing a great pow wow at home, but I’m all for new experiences)
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9692I agree with you there….you can learn a lot from new experiences and meeting new friends as well. I have learned an enormous amount in the last year…I still have much to learn still…but, am looking forward to attending as many pow wows as my work life will allow. I need to hear the drum….and I don’t personally care for any politics.
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9865Howdy all,
I’ll be going to the Occaneechi-Saponi pow wow on June 12th from Durham, and I was hoping to get some directions since I’m not familliar with the area. I can find Hillsborough on a map, but were in town will it be? They allow camping that night?
Thanks
April 3, 2004 at 5:46 am #9871Take exit 164 off I-85. Head north into downtown Hillsborough (such as it is) After leaving the interstate you will go maybe a mile and cross a little bridge over the Eno River. Pow-wow will be on your right. Park in the lot on Margaret Lane (the first intersection after crossing the River)
There is primative camping available on site; no facilities. (other than the porta-johns)
Grounds open 5PM Friday, 10 AM Saturday
