Hi there. Just wondered if anyone used Richmond archives?
(I wouldn’t even know where they are, since I am out of state)
Reason I am asking is since the courthouse burned down(pre 20th cent. it was in later 1700s wasnt it? I’m too lazy tolook it up), Boydton, (hence all records…ones I want! :/ are gone) if anyone has gotten state records. I thought that if there were county records (pre land grants) that there should be something on a state level. (Although this is still when house of Burgesses would have been around and Williamsburg was the seat)
I wonder if any records, for that, would you have to go to Washington? (Then those records some folks were mentioning were being destroyed??? by the govt?? re pertaining to Native/native related)
hmpt.
So, just wondered if anyone had found any early stuff, say 1760s or earlier before or around the time Brusn and Meck. co split.
Thanks!
I hope to do some work (end of June) re some research then know what family names to search for whenI come down thsi summer.

May 9, 2006 at 2:33 am #21332Assuming you mean Richmond VA (and not KY, or England or someplace), I have at least been where they are — but it’s been about 40 years. Though I’m about an hour and a half from Richmond; I just don’t find much cause to go there. Maybe I shall, if I get into this forum a little more.
Much of Richmond was burned by the Yankees, I mean our US troops, at the very end of the Civil War. However I think a lot of the State Archives were amassed since then, by collecting old records (or copies of them) from the courthouses that hadn’t been similarly destroyed, whether by the aforesaid Yankees or by careless smokers. Virginia in general, and Richmond in particular, have been abundantly furnished with both.
The forum contributor who I think would have a more detailed answer, if your research question were more detailed, goes by the Member name “itconani” and lives in Richmond. You might try an email or Personal Message. Your question was asked more recently than itconani has posted.
May 9, 2006 at 2:33 am #21443I go to the Virginia State Library located in Richmond,VA. I have looked up land grants dated 1790. I have not noticed any further back. The land grants are in a card catalog then you look them up on microfilm. I have copied two land grant my GGGGrandfather got around that time.
