Rachel and I are blessed to live on the edge of Morehead City, N C. We have a comfortable apartment and wonderful neighbors. For the first time I am unable to garden but I have a crop of collards growing in pots on our patio. Those same pots furnished us tomatoes in the summer and we actually ate the lat one about 3 weeks ago. I miss my fig tree the most but have found a dwarf variety and will give up one of my large moonplant pots and plant a fig tree in February.
IF ANYONE WANTS SOME MOONFLOWER SEEDS JUST LET ME KNOW AND I WILL BE GLAD TO SHARE. IT IS AWESOME TO WATCH THEM OPEN IN THE EVENING AND THE AROMA IS LIKE SWEET PERFUME.
We have wetlands on two sides of our comples and we are blessed with frogs. It is a joke some evenings that we must be in Egypt with the plague of the frogs. We have the tiny green critters that actually sound like a duck quacking and stick themselves to the walls and railings and will quickly get in the door if near by. They don’t get much bigger than the end joint of your little finger. Then the black ones on the ground and porch that you can actually see growing with fat tummy’s nightly. They must consume a ton of flying insects every night. Some night ‘s the frogs are so many and so loud you can hear them inside with all the windows closed. Rachel and I love it.
I was born and raised in northern Granville County,NC with much of my family coming out of Halifax and Mecklenburg Co. Va. We were right on the Virginia and Carolina line. ED
Ed, it’s funny your take on these creatures….we were watching a special once on Hawaii and how the frogs have taken over there. Much like what you describe…and how the locals are exterminating them since the noise is so irritating….it’s all in the perspective, eh?
We had a creature on our porch last night…couldn’t figure out if it was a bird or one of your froggies….y’all doing ok? Have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! Guess collards are on the menu?????
Becky, those frogs along with some of the coastal birds make up a great synphony in sound. Never would I complain. When we lived near Henderson that old place had a rock spring house and a natural spring. We had frogs and other creatures dipping and diving all the time. A fellow came by one day and wanted to see the spring. There happened to be two frogs that were swimming and jumped out. He said and you drink that water! I said, the best in the country and don’t let the frogs bother you. They asure us the water is perfectly pure and fit for drinking. It’s finding one belly up that would stop us from drinking out of this spring. They tell us it is clean and healthy to consume. No sweeter sounds than God’s creatures– whose already itching to hear spring peepers and the wippowill ? But winter is officially here as of this past week and we wish you all a wonderful Christmas season and a renewed closeness and love in your families. Ed

This summer we had a frog living in our fountain and I loved sitting on the porch in the evenings listening to him croak. Our cat liked to watch him too but probably for a different reason. But she wasn’t willing to get in the water to catch him. I hope he’s back this next spring. Hope you’re doing okay! Everyone’s fine here in Indiana. Merry Christmas.

I tried to post it on the thread where we were discussing Lake Saponi etc. (Share History Sources, or whatever) — but it had too many bytes to post, so I just typed in the words.
My grandmother Maria was blessed to live in beautiful WV. and Washington State. Thought I would share a picture of her in her element; must be where I got my love for fishing…

Hey PappyDick is the marker a repalcement for an older one? and is it still the original place of the old village? Just curious.
Oh Roca , perhaps you may want to take a rubbing of it, if it’s very old, still be neat to see.

The legalities of the catch I am unsure of, but I am not sure what the rules were when this photo was taken (1970’s?). My grandmother has since passed on and I am sorry that I never met her in person, but I agree it’s in the blood.
Actually, I think this photo was taken around Yakima, WA., pretty close to your neck of the woods.

Just kidding about the legal sizes.. when Iam out in the sticks and no one is watching over my shoulder, the pan usually has some tender goodies in it. Really we have had fur, fins, and feathers of all sizes in all seasons.
My Mom always used to expalin to me how to trap and snare, and make fish traps with wire mesh etc, comes in really handy when things get skinny!

I live in Gastonia near Crowders Mountain, So I can occassionally see deer, possums, and other wildlife.
There is so much development going on in Gaston & Mecklenburg Counties in N.C., and York co. S.C., in the past few years so much wooded land has been turned into housing subdivisions, and wildlife has been displaced in the process.
I wish more land would be protected for the wildlife in this area.
I love to gardena nd work with flowers. Ed are they for real???:)
