Hi, I am finally feeling like more myself. I have not been that sick with the intestinal flu since I was a teenager. I had a 101.5 fever in the emergency room There is one thing I have to say about Ginger capsules. I ate a banana twice with a ginger capsule and water, and it would make me sweat. I dont know if Ginger has a fever breaking herb in it or not. Does anyone know? But it sure has helped. Also I got some genealogy emails in as well that I will post on the Genealogy page. Has to do with “Jones” family.
May 19, 2006 at 12:50 am #21372Glad you’re feeling better. I’ve never been able to take strong doses of ginger, I get an upset stomach, though I’ve heard it can be used medicinally. The Chinese use it as an herbal remedy.

According to the Univ. of Maryland Medical Center, ginger has been used in Asian, Indian, and Arabic countries since ancient times to aid digestion and treat stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea (ginger ale is a known “stomach settler”). In China, pregnant women use it for morning sickness. It’s also been used to treat arthritis, colic, and heart problems (due to it’s blood-thinning and cholesterol lowering properties).
It also has anti-inflamatory properties which explains the arthritis remedy and is also used as treatment for the common cold. Botanical.com states that it is a stimulant. It’s said that in ninteenth century English pubs, powered ginger was put in small jars and put on the bar to sprinkle in beer, thus the origin of ginger ale.
And yes, it’s a diaphoretic meaning that it increases perspiration and aids in reducing fever. Henry VIII instructed the mayor of London to use ginger’s diaphoretic qualities as a plague medicine.
Ginger is also used in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory problems by loosening and expelling phlegm in the lungs.
Glad you’re feeling better!

May 19, 2006 at 12:50 am #21509Thanks for the post Jim. What other herbs or common-sense kind of things do you know about (like vinegar, garlic, onions, salts, minerals (mud masks), pine tar soap, etc)?
Post it on a new thread here for everyone to add to it. I believe that it will become one of the more popular threads on “shoot the breeze”!!!
Thanks again.

You’ve just started a great thread for just this purpose. I’ve already posted one reply and you just reminded me of another thing. Moving to “Herbs and Remedies”.
