Some info from a 2003 posting by Bill.
Ah-ha ! It worked.
The Saponi “association” in my mind came about because of Brenda’s reply to Linda’s post of 4-2-2002 “Saponi Military Prescence in Rev. War”. This was not a list of Saponi names.
Brenda listed a group of names from Capt. Swift’s company who were threatened with being sent aboard ships in eastern Virginia to defend the Chesapeake Bay from the Brits.
This list of names corresponds ‘almost’ totally with surnames of NDN families from various parts of the country originating in Virginia, that I’ve attempted to trace over the years.
That list included Joseph Laws/Law, who was from Montgomery Co., Va (1782 Tax List), who is a descendant of a couple of my NDN ladies (maternal line descended from Orange & Spots.Co COLLINS) – Elishaba, a.k.a. Elizabeth LAWSON, b.abt.1694 Va., d.aft.1733 Lunenberg Co., and her dau-in-law Lazinka, a.k.a Sarah COCKERHAM, b.abt.1731 then Lunenburg Co., Va., d.abt. June 1799 Franklin/Henry County line on Simmons Creek, who was a dau of the Indian Trader Abner Cockerham.
(The Cockerhams are also related to my Wilburn line (paternal) via BLAIR & BLEVINS and a couple more I don’t have in front of me at the moment.)
Elishaba m’d William I. Law/Laws, b. 4 Jan 1690 Kemnay, Aberdeen Scotland, who with his father, was deported by the Brits to Virginia and settled in the wilds of Henrico Co, parent county of Goochland and Albermarle. Their son John Birdwell Law, b.1722 Lunenburg or Henrico Co’s m’d Lazinka in 1748 Halifax Co (now Franklin Co), Va. John’s brother was Joseph, b. 1716, who moved to Wilkes Co., NC about 1763.
The Joseph on Brenda’s list may be John or Joseph’s son or nephew from Montgomery County. A DUNCAN and an OSBURN researcher seem to be interested in Joseph’s line.

In this line of the Laws and Willis are Bill’s Jesse Law and Mary Willis. Jesse Law(s) applied for a pension Aug 19 1833 age 76 from Oldham co Ky. His wife applied Nov 30 1843 at age 84 in Jefferson co In. She was then living with her son-in-law Francis Barnes. Low and behold, The wife of this Francis is a Jane McGannon. Here is where this journey started. This Jane McGannon is a great aunt to my Jane Mcgannon. (direct line).
Child of theirs John Barnes married Sarah Law. Another child Francis Barnes married Averilla Law. Married in Henry co Ky. A Richard Lemaster married another sibling Elizabeth Law. Richard is the son of John Lemaster and Sarah Vest. John Lemaster and Sarah Vest also had Eleazor Lemaster married to Machell Tackett and then Rachel Ramey. Both in the Johnson co, Magoffin co ky area. Both the Tackett and Ramey Melungeon/Native ties to that area. John Lemaster’s brother was Abraham Lemaster who married my Martha Wooten Tanner when she was widowed. John Lemaster and Sarah Vest also had children Sarah Lemaster married James Barnes. Mary Lemaster married Benjamin Barnes and James Lemaster married Nancy Ann Barnes.
Francis Barnes had two sons, Shadrack and Bingamon. There is a deed 1838 between James Lemaster and James Barnes of Hardin co ky and George Strother of Trimble co ky on Corn creek where the Barnes settled. Shadrack and Bingamon are the first sons by an unknown wife and Francis and Jane had several children.
December 31, 2009 at 6:10 pm #34700Further, Leroy Bain Has Susannah Bain who married William Joel Law in Jefferson co in.(Bill’s) (Bill mentioned doubly descending from the Bain and Foster (related to the Collins of Orange co Va). Another child fo Leroy Bain is Elizabeth Christian Bain who married Thomas Wooten Tanner. (one of the sons of my Josiah Tanner and Martha Wooten) They end up in Illinois but he returns, alone, and dies at the home of Anderson Law. Yes, related also.
Jesse Law’s father was the John Birdwell Law married to Elishabe a.k.a. Elizabeth Lawson. Jesse’s mother, Lazinka a.k.a. Sarah Cockerham daughter to the trader Abner Cockerham. This will get more complicated.
I am showing another child of Eleazor Lemaster and Machell Tackett as Sarah Elizabeth Lemaster married to Jesse Osborn, daughter of Ephraim Osborn and Mary Polly Brock. Now we are getting into the Brock line as in Aaron Brock of Ky.
This gets interesting. A brother to Ephraim Osborn, Enoch, was also a trader. The Grandmother of Edward Callahan who married Mahala Brock is Mary Stott who married John Callahan. Mary in my direct again. Edward’s Father, Darby Callahan was in the member list of Rockingham co NC Matrimony Creek Baptist church 1776 with Jesse Brock. Jesse Brock and Mary Brock siblings. Is this becoming confusing? Saj
