Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I’m confused! I learned I’m possibly somehow connected to the English colonist Nathaniel Bass via genetic triangulation. However, I seem to come off on an offshoot of his descendants who may have Native American connections. Let me try to explain.
I match most closely with the descendants of William Basse Sr., son of John Basse, but I also match the supposed descendants of John and Elizabeth Keziah Basse via Richard Bass {born 1707}. Elizabeth is thought to be of Nansemond ancestry. BUT I’ve read many things that refute that some of Richard Bass’ children were not his own but rather Edward Bass’ grandchildren- descended from the Chowan and/or Nansemond tribe/s.
To make things even more confusing, I’ve read that the John Basse who married Elizabeth isn’t even Nathaniel Basse’ son and that is a different Basse altogether. This contradicts the Basse Family bible I’ve read. Were they even related?
Also… I’ve also read accounts that seem to be confusing Edward Basse for John Basse.
Could anyone try to explain this and straighten this out for me? I’m really confused but genealogy will do that. I hope this isn’t too much to ask.
I can only add to the confusion….. I have heard that a male descendant of William Bass matched DNA with a freed Angolan indentured servant, not John Basse. Here is the African coming into the Bass line at the beginning. However, William’s wife was most likely Nansemond which, in a matrilineal society, would seem to me to make William’s line be as much (or more;-) Nansemond as any of the other Bass lines. ??
