I would like to first off say thank you for this forum.
I have known all my life we were “something” native blood. Even if a drop, my family cherished it. I have recently through 7 years of research found a link of the family who was said to be Saponi.
I would like to know if there are any others with the surname “Bunch” who were in the Virginias and Carolinas who migrated on who are also Saponi?
It would mean a great deal to me to know what I have found is truth and I can claim it with pride, whether or not a band is willing to accept me or not.
I have been active in our native community here for over 20 years and would love to be able to simply say, yes I am ________, with no questions.

Welcome to Saponitown. Bunch is indeed one of the core surnames in the group of documented Saponi ndns who left Va for old Granville co.NC and then to Surry Co,NC and then to Newman’s Ridge, TN.
Search “Bunch” and you should have months of reading here. Which specific line are you looking?
My lineage that claims “Virginia Indian” a mix of Powhatan and Eastern Siouan, has a Bunch lineage. Left VA for TN around 1900, give or take.

From my understanding and reading, the line I am looking for is:
John Bunch Holder
1731-1801 Bertie NC to Orange NC -married- Anna/Ayn (possibly Catawba native)
son of
Susannah Bunch
1714-1787 Bertie NC to Bertie NC -married- Thomas Holder
daughter of
Henry Bunch
1685-1775 Bertie NC to Bertie NC -married-
son of
Paul Bunch
1664-1729 Hannover VA to Chowan NC. -married- Amy Naomi Winigum
And you say there are “documented ” Bunch family as Saponi’s? Can you direct me to those documents? I would be grateful.

Tthe ancestors you mention are on Ted Collins site: My COLLINS Research including BUNCH, BURNETT, HURST, HUTCHISON, PETTYJOHN, BLACKSTONE, BARLOW etc. http://mycollinsgenresearch.tribalpages.com
Paul Bunch 1664-1726, John Bunch Holder, Thomas Holder (1710-1774), and Henry Bunch (listed as 1690-1775 on that page). There are multiple people named Susannah Bunch but not one that matches those dates.
There is a relationship calculator on this site, so you can use it to see if your ancestors are tied to another persons.
I checked my Beeler and Hurst ancestors listed on this site but they do not connect to your Bunch ancestors.

Marc, how do I navigate to the “Relationship Calculator” you mentioned in your post.
It’s under the menu People > Relationships. But checking it looks like you need a login in order to access it. You can get one using the Request Invitation link.
I’ve been searching but haven’t found where document was discussed. It’s here somewhere. I am referring to the VA court document naming a group of Saponi Indians who have been cited for killing a hog and setting the woods on fire. They next appear in old Granville Co,NC.
Hi Everyone-
I contacted this forum requesting any information for my best friend, who lives with me. She is VERY family focused and over the past few years has lost all of her relatives. I have been helping her find out her genealogy on her father- who she is most alike and cherished so deeply. This entire side of her family tree all have very dark eyes, olive skin tone, dark thick hair, high prominent cheek bones, and a tenacious, hard working, family oriented soul.
Here’s how I think there is a fit with the Saponi…..Davis from Davis / Turner (Bell co., KY early 1900’s), from the Turner side comes Turner / Jones (again, Bell Co., KY), Jones / Hatfield (Bell Co., KY), and I think Jones / Powers (and still KY – I think Henderson KY?). The relative from whom she heard there was Native American (which to this point I haven’t been able to substantiate), is Mossie Jones, January 18, 1894 (Bell Co., KY) until March 16, 1959 (Pineville, Bell, KY).
If anyone can help, the names seem to focus on the ones listed above. Any leads would be appreciated beyond expression.
