August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22527Not wanting to horn in, or anything — but just as a matter of record Monday was my birthday, too. (Ed and I had already figured this out, we had some off-forum correspondence a few months ago. And welcome aboard, Gecko.) Guess I should update my profile or something, when I signed up back in ’02 I wasn’t planning to post very much.
Triracial Cake is kind of inspired, in a tacky sort of way that used to characterize the art and humor of Austin, TX in the 1970s. (Armadillos drinking Lone Star beer, wearing headphones and listening to Willie and Waylon albums. Eclectic tastes.) I can only assume it would offend those of the pureblood mentality; it doesn’t take very much to do that. Maybe we should have a recipe contest, give it away at pow wows, make it the official cake of the Eastern Siouan Descendants Association — stuff like that. Just a late night train of thought, I haven’t been smoking anything funny. (Can’t vouch for Austin artists in the 70s, however.)
August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22532Ok, Pappy….guess we need to add a few more candles to the cake for you…Happy Belated Birthday to you as well…(yep, need to update your profile)…so what’s on your gift list???
Well, the beans certainly sound good….black beans, white navy beans, and red beans….Triracial Stew with yellow rice…with greens and cornbread….might have to work on that recipe one weekend. I can cook greens….and I cook Three Sister’s Soup a lot in the winter. That’s why I was freezing squash this summer.
There are many things that could go that way, Pappy….making a statement without saying a word. And I don’t worry so much about offending the purebloods…I am what I am and they are who they are. Actually the cake idea was my son’s because he couldn’t decide on which type he wanted for his birthday in July.
Aho

August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22539Well we used to mix some different types of cake together in one pan long ago!…….. ,I really miss those days, but there is a “corn-bean bread”, looks pretty good, in the batter beans are mixed in.
Red beans, white kidney beans and black beans in corn bread sounds pretty good to me………
Sorry I ahve been away for some time, for those I have missed ” Happy Birthday”.. and a GREAT many More!
August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22541That would also comprise a complete protein.
August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22547Beans in cornbread, instead of corn in my baked beans, Hmmm.
August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22548I got sidetracked, Happy Birthday Guys!

August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22558Hehehe….power of suggestion…so how did the meal turn out?? We had a wonderful dinner with Ed and his wife….and got some good pickles in return. It’s too hot here for beans and cornbread yet…that’s more of a fall/winter thing for us. Still eating tomato sammiches…and having corn on the cob…and fresh cantaloupe, watermelon…oh, yeah, and fried okra.
August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22561This is for Pappy and Geko from the Yancey’s. 31’st July ain’t a bad day to be born on !!!!!!!!! My mother is not very alert to many things this year and the first time she has not mentioned my birthday but I have to tell you what kind of lady she is. She would call me every year on the 6th day of June and say, “Do you know what this day is?” I would play the game as if I didn’t remember, then she would tell me I met your daddy however many years ago on this very day and procede to tell me about her first sighting of him and his of her. The year was 1942 and daddy and his brothers were making music and singing a crazy song entitled “Bury me beneath the willow, the weeping willow tree.” My mom and her sister natural alto’s just jined right in. They were married on July 9,1942 and I arrived on the scene July 31,1943. My mama tied tobacco all day at the tobacco barn, came in that evening and she and my grandmother finished supper and put it on the table. After supper daddy was sent to get Dr. Bradsher and a couple hours later I was born there in the homeplace. How many think they have it tough today? You guys have a great day. Ed
August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22562Ed, it was a pleasure meeting you and your wife. I look forward to our next meeting. If we had sit there any longer, I think they would have asked us to pay for another meal 😉
August 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #22563Ed…as I worked yesterday at the store we had a pregnant girl in our department…and they have provided a stool for her to sit on while she is ringing at the cash register. And I am thinking to myself, what if she had to farm and take care of livestock and do what our ancestors have done…and our parents and our generation continue to do? I wonder how will they survive when we are gone…are there enough of that generation that have learned the basics to carry on??
Oh, and we dined on our wonderful pickles last night…right out of the jar…yummm…
