Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
hi, it was suggested to me to put some names here so here goes: maternal ggmother said she was blackfoot.great grandmother’s maiden name was gurganus, which we were told had been changed from gunselow.i have tried to find gunselow everywhere and came up with nothing.the closest i came was one name listed on one of the cherokee rolls (i don’t have it with me,so spelling might be wrong) “gah nuh ska low”.the name only appears on one roll, not before and not after.i guess it is possible that the person was not really cherokee, but was passing through, etc. this ggmother’s husband,my ggfather’s name was leggett.supposedly he also was part native american,i’m not sure what tribe.these folks lived in martin county,nc i believe or thereabouts. also on my dad’s side:he told us there was some “black dutch” in his family on his mother’s side.her maiden name was branham.i know this is a monacan name and also a melungeon name.these folks were from extreme western va & over the ky line.i’m going to study the monacan surname list on this site when i have time, see if anything pans out there.anybody out there have input? thanks for being here!:)
Hi. There are Gurganus and Leggett households in 1930 and earlier Martin Co., NC. What are the full names of your grandparents and about when were they born? I’ll need those names to help you.
Bill
