Hi – My name is Lisa and I am looking for my Bodford ancestors who I have been told and believe are Native American. I have a wonderful picture of my Great-grandmother (Lucy Bodford) and have no doubt she is Native American.
Here is all I have found on the family:

Children of Fredrick & Anne:

Nancy Bodford b: NC m: William Lewis Dec. 1872 in Davidson Co., NC
George Bodford
Ellen Bodford
Fredrick Bodford m: Martha Sheets April 15, 1877 in Davidson Co., NC

This surname has undergone a few spelling interpretations over time.
George “Bastford”, age 26 to 44, was in 1820 Rowan Co. Census for Salisbury (p.286) when Davidson Co was a part of Rowan Co.
His household at that time contained:
2 males under 10.
1 male 26 to 44.
3 females under 10.
2 females 10 to 15.
1 female 26 to 44.
I haven’t figured out where he came from yet, but some of the family moved from Davidson to Forsyth Co during the 1860s.

On the 1850 Davidson Co., NC Census, North Subdivision; 26 August; p.527,
visit # 613:
Frederick BODSFORD, 34, m, – , Shoemaker, $50, NC.
Anna……………………., 30, f, – , NC.
Nancy……………………, 3, f, – , NC.
George…………………., 1, m, – , NC.
Next door, visit 614:
George BODSFORD, 79, m, – , farmer, $75, NC.
Eve……………………, 65, f, – , NC.
Susan……………….., 23, f, – , NC.
William………………., 21, m, – , Laborer, NC.
(Susan m’d Samuel Perriman 18 Feb 1854 (Bond date) in Davidson Co; Bondsman was William Bodsford.)
at Visit 928 is a probable son of George:
John BODSFORD, 31, m, – , Shoemaker, $0, NC.
Abigail……………, 24, f, – , NC.
Amanda…………., 1, f, – , NC.
Francis MACKSVILLE, 23, m, – , Shoemaker, $0, Penn.

Nancy…………………, 14, f, – , NC.

Franklin………………., 4, m, – , NC.
Five houses away, visit 672:
William BODFORD, 32, m, – , Farmer, $100, $65, NC.
Sarah………………, 26, f, – , NC.
Andrew……………, 6, m, – , NC.
John……………….., 3, m, – , NC.
John WHITLOW, 17, m, – , NC.
George BODFORD, 79, m, – , Infirmed, $0, $0, NC.
Ever…………………, 65, f, – , Domestic, NC.
(George and Eve’s ages are the same in 1850 and 1860 census, so I can’t even guess which might be correct. Eva/Eve’s age on the 1870 census is 79, which argues for the 1860 census being more nearly correct, but I don’t know)
(partial explanation for the Whitlow boy is that a Wm. Whitlow m’d a Phebe Batiford – another spelling variation – on 22 Aug 1824 (Bond date) in Davidson Co., NC. Bondsman was E. BROWN.)
