Hi All:
I’m new to Saponitown and have so enjoyed finding familiar names. First, let me say I have been doing genealogy for 30 years on my White folks but found names that became stumbling blocks along the way. Most suggest NA ancestors and there seems to be a pattern here.
One of those ancestors is my 4th ggmo Frances “Fanny” Bolling b. abt. 1776 in VA. She married John M. Bowles in Henry Co., VA (Mar. Lic) and they moved to DeKalb Co., TN on Sink Creek (Land Records). John was White or everything I have so far suggests this. While trying to find anything on Fanny Bolling, I always came up with zero. Then I went to VA and found a letter by her parents giving permission for her sister, Nancye (sic Nancy) to marry John Bowles’ brother William J. Bowles. The letter was signed by John Bolling and Mary Jefferson Bolling.
Further research led me to Chesterfield Co., VA to the Chestnut Grove Plantation that they owned and lived on late in their lives. By the way, the Chesterfield Hist. Soc. has no records of this plantation or where John & Mary J. Bolling are buried. Previously they had lived on the Lickinghole Plantation in Albemarle/Charlotte Co., VA. I followed the entire generations of the Bollings back to Pocahontas and John Rolfe and that was exciting but I can find no records that John Bolling and Mary Jefferson Bolling had daughters, Nancye and Fanny. John, in various records is also referred to as John William Blair Bolling. There just does not appear to be any records of these two young ladies, other than the permission letter I found, to verify who their parents are. Women played such a silent role in history and this may be the reason – especially the youngest daughters of aging parents.
This is my brickwall – any help appreciated!
Sorry, I’ve written a book here but I have several other ancestors that I am sure are Native American and can’t find records on, so hang in there with me with these long explanations.

The only clue I have to go on is a letter written from Joshua & Mary’s ggranson in 1915 that Mary is decended through the Boling- Randolph line.
Hang in there and perhaps these lines will be worked out eventually.
