Tshwe’n Linda,
I would say that there was some intermarrying that went on,thus the Bunch surname amongst us(Tuscarora) today as well as others. Many small Tribes took santuary among us for protection, and were later absorbed into the Tuscarora, such as Choanoc,Yeopim,Coree,Neusiak,Pamlico, some Siouan,Meherrin,Nottoway,Nansemond,Hatteras,Bear River etc.
I spent the weekend of the 8th-10th of Dec. at “Indian Woods”. We had some very special and spiritual experiences. I am planning on moving back to “Indian Woods”in the near future, where I can put my whole self into working for my people.

I would really like to find out about Robert Bunch in the photo, I have seen that photo before somewhere,I would like to know if he migrated from “Indian Woods” Bertie County NC or not. I am thinking I saw that picture with some photos from Bertie. I may be wrong. Does anyone know more about him?

December 17, 2006 at 2:44 pm #37647Greetings!
I know this is an old thread, but since I am new here I’m absorbing the massive wealth of valuable information on this site. I wanted to comment because in my current family research I have discovered that I am descended from the Bunch family as well. One of my ancestors is Tamerson Thomasine Bunch born in Chowan County NC in 1729. I did not know of the direct Tuscarora association with this surname until now. The surprises never stop! In my 2 years of researching I have come to the realization that the tribes of North Carolina and VA are all interconnected. The pieces of the puzzle fit together seamlessly and it’s a beautiful thing. If I find out more about the Bunches I will most definitely share. Cheers to reunited family!
December 17, 2006 at 2:44 pm #37648Ryan, welcome to Saponitown.
I see that we share some of the same surnames. Are you of the William Bass line? What do you know about your Evans?….. and Richardson?
I agree that the VA/NC tribes are MUCH more interconnected than the tribes seem to realize. It’s a shame that they don’t act more like family than they do. If all the native peoples of VA/NC would unite as one, we would be a force to be reckoned with.
Were you at the Nansemand powwow this past weekend?

Thank you Dreaminghawk, and thanks also to Linda Carter as well. The warm welcome is greatly appreciated. I am very glad to be a part of the forum. I don’t even know where to start, there is so much info here!
Yes I am from the William Bass line, down through Edward Bass and then Elijah and Mary Bass. My mother is a member of the Haliwa Saponi tribe and I only recently discovered our Namsemond link. I was pretty surprised when I first read about John Basse and Elizabeth, that story blew me away and then to find out there is a whole other tribe out there that we lost touch with was mind blowing and wonderful.
I discovered all of this when I stumbled onto the work of Deloris Williams an amazing historian and researcher of our families. I reached out to her and she also helped me find out more info when I got stumped about the Harris family.
Most of my mother’s family are Richardsons and Evans. My grandparents were Charlie Rudolf Evans and Hester Richardson of Warren/Halifax counties. I have traced them back to Benjamin Richardson b. 1750 in Halifax County NC, and James Evans b. 1720 in Surry County Virginia.
Now I’m getting started researching the Bunch family, and hope that I can help our cousins who are seeking more info about them. I didn’t make it to the Namsemond pow wow, I do plan to attend the next one. It would be great if we could get a group here together from the forum to go.
I’m sure we will have many more discussions up ahead as we have several different families in common. Looking forward to it!
