Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
This is an IndianCountryToday by Charles Kader published yesterday:
It starts off with the armed occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge and the Burns Paiute Tribe, but gets into issues in upstate NY. It talks about Sullivan burning out the Cayuga and Seneca (when the Tutelo were living with them).
It also gets into the roots of spiritualism that started in this area. In doing my genealogy it seems several spiritual movements and ideas came out of this time and place. Handsome Lake, Cornplant, the Quakers, Shakers, Mormons, etc. This is the first article I’ve noticed that talks about this. He also notes the seeming Quaker influence on the code of Handsome Lake Gai’wiio (good message).
I read that the my 3rd great grandfather’s first wife’s family were Quakers teaching Cornplanters children. His second wife was my Blackfoot ancestor.
