Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I don’t have that much information, but maybe someone will see something that rings a bell. 🙂
I have a great great grandmother named Mary ?, married to Jefferson Johson, who is said to have been full Blackfoot. I think they met and married in Arkansas. Jefferson was born in Texas, June 1860, and Mary in Georgia, Aug. 1854. (I mispoke before and thought she was born in Virginia.)
I have another great great grandmother who was said to have been full Cherokee. I have no birth year for her, nor birthplace, but several years ago I possibly found a record for her and her husband living in North Carolina with a baby daughter Annie, my great grandmother. Her name was Mary and a possible last name was Canada or Canadien. Dreaminghawk pointed out that this may be Canady or Kennedy. She married William Bethel and had one daughter, Annie Bethel. Story goes William brought her out to Eleuthera, Bahamas and ended up leaving her there with their daughter. He moved to the Florida Keys, never returned and started another family there. William Bethel was said to have been Scottish.
I have another line but this one is Choctaw. My great great grandmother Annie Vaughn went to Arkansas during the removal from Mississippi. Her husband was Jacob Simpson and he was from Alabama. I believe he also had Native American ancestry.
Also somewhere in this mix is the Goldens or Goldings from North Carolina, but right now I have no clue where they come into the picture.
Thank you so much for reading this. 🙂
