Does anybody know how to go about searching for records of mulatto children born of slave women and their masters? I’m finding it very hard to connect my mulatto gggrandfather William Robert Waller II to the Caucasian Wallers – both of King William Co. VA. I’m also trying to find the connection between my fpc George Edwin Braxton to Carter Braxton’s family – both also of King William Co. VA.
Sometimes Masters’ Wills leave instructions for their descendants to be certain that a particular slave be given proper schooling and clothing. Very rarely does the Master openly claim a mulatto child as their own blood. My William Robert Waller, II had 90+ acres of land…….how did he get it? His children were fair-skinned, one Uncle Eddy worked in Panama and passed whenever the opportunity presented itself for his good…LOL
Other that Owner’s Wills, how can I go about making that link from Caucasian to Mulatto/Indian mix?

I found most answers to these questions in deeds and wills. My GGG Grandfather Ralph made provisions for his sons after his death (without openly acknowledging they were his sons). His daughter bought her husband and land for what seemed like an unrealistically low amount from her father. This info was contained in a deed. On the down side, your ancestor’s surname may not be the same as his biological father. My ancestors were owned and given surnames of the owner. I searched a long time for my great grandmothers father using her surname. When I found out that my cousin owned her Bible, I had him to check. She recorded the name of her biological father on the family pages and he did not have the same surname as hers. Many of the descendants of former slaveowners still have the records. Sometimes they are willing to help you with your research. I posted my request on a surname message board and received a lot of help. You’re not alone! Good luck!
