Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Golly Molly!! I have another DNA match that may be of the Blackfoot Tribe?? I say that kiddingly as I’m always excited to find new cousins and surnames and Indian Blood.
This name is very unusual and, from my experience, appears to be French – maybe Portuguese? A little run down:
There are many Chavous ancestors who are buried on/near Beech Island, SC near Aikens but these are the only ones I can find. However, some of them migrated across the river to the Augusta, GA area. The SC ones are at the end of the research line so to speak. My new cousin said that the Chavous were Blackfoot or possibly Pee Dee Indians. This is carried down in all the family lines.
The couple in question is Hampton Chavous married to Christine Williams. I found Christine Chavous b. 1825 d. 1890 in the Passworth Cemetery in Richmond Co., GA near Augusta. She was likely born in what is Aikens Co., SC now and migrated to GA after her marrige to Hampton. Her parents were Fountain Williams of Orangeburg Co., SC and Delila Mills – Delilah is also suspected to be a Blackfoot. I have no idea who Hampton Chavous’ parents were.
Does anyone have this very unusual surname? It is not Chavis or Chavers – simply Chavous.
