I hope I haven’t asked this question before, but is there an on-line data base that contains the jackets that were recorded with the applications to the Cherokee Nation?
April 28, 2006 at 7:31 pm #20686Hello Collins, yes there was but I don’t recall who posted the link, it maybe that the web owner or another person can remember the post.
If you locate it please repost that link please.
April 28, 2006 at 7:31 pm #20688Thanks Tom, hopefully someone will remember the thread.
I was hoping to get back to the Archive after the new year started, but you have to have your car inspection, tags, and insurance to get in and I have been having trouble getting my car to pass inspection. Still trying to figure out why one sensor keeps going off. Until then I have to utilize the net.
I have two names that I need the jackets on to see what they have on them. I’ve located Ely Collins on the Dawes but I have yet to pull his jacket. I still need to look at Lillie Johnson’s app.
We had several relatives that got rounded up during the marches and some got away during that snow storm at the Mississippi crossing. They fled back to Kentucky and North Carolina to hide.
Another thing I would love to check on is any information on Medicine shows. Our Cheney’s supposedly had a Medicine Show and hired most of the Lakota that went with Wild Bill Cody’s Medicine Show when it ended. That is how the Turnbull and Cheney’s supposedly got connected with the Lakota.
I just don’t even know where to start on that info. search.
April 28, 2006 at 7:31 pm #20690That would be a tough search on “Medicine Shows”, but in the areas that may have had them, contact the small Museums like the state and county people, aswell there must be an index for this kind of show, although it may be scattered, that contatradictory I know, bu first I’d try the Buffalo Bill Historical Society, they should be on the web.
Best wishes let me know if I an help in any way!

April 28, 2006 at 7:31 pm #20736Thanks Todd, I have the Cherokee rolls East and West in book format. Each applicant had an application and also an interview that they went through. The interview was typed out in a file folder they call a jacket. Each applicant has a jacket whether denied or accepted. The jackets some times can contain important genealogic information. Even when denied an applicant could have their Indian ancestory varified through that interview process. I know that there are sites out there that have the Dawes rolls, but I’m also wondering if there are any sites that have the jacket information as well. It would be interesting to see the Shawnee jackets and rolls as well since many of the Shawnee that were put in Oklahoma around the time of the Dawes came from Kansas in and around I think Shawnee township. Some of the other tribes would be interesting as well like the Osage and Seneca.
April 28, 2006 at 7:31 pm #20769To shorten your search call one of the Cherokee offices in Oklahoma or North Carolina, they’ll know exactly where to send for this info, they will know what the web site will be, the Museum of the Cherokee Indain may also know or one of thier band member genalogists!
