My Kings and Sheperds lived in Sedalia for a long while. Charles W King was born in East Quincy Illinois in 1870. Anna Rachel Bell Sheperd was born in Glasscow, Mo in 1871. They met in Blackwater Pettis MO, and were married and lived in Sedalia Pettis MO until ther deaths. There daughter was Della Maye King born in 1892, and she married Lester Murry abt 1909 in Lamonte Pettis MO. This is the line that the Blackfoot is supposed to have come from??? My mother still firmly believes they were Cherokee. I don’t know. All I remember was Grandma saying she was Dutch-Irish Blackfoot… And seeing her and her children I believe it to be one of the two…. according to some researchers our Whitehead family was in Chatham Co. N.C.,
and around 1800 went to Carter Co. Tn, and some went on to Blount Co. Tn
I have noticed that with the Whitehead family many of them would have a English name as well as another name that they were called such as
James Whitehead also called Tiger Whitehead
James Whitehead also called Wolf Whitehead
Thomas Whitehead also called Whispering Tom
Granville Whithead also called Grancer Whitehead
was this common in your branch of Whitehead’s ?
I wasn’t aware that Thomas and Sarah had any Children. I am thru his first wife Mary X???. I can put you in touch with a Whitehead that is very knowledgable about the many branches of this family as long as you don’t mention our Native Heritage. He has a MYFAMILY.COM Page for all the branches of Whiteheads. He even has a DNA test set up.
I am very familiar with the Whiteheads of Carter County Tennessee. James Tiger Whitehead was a legend in Tennessee. Johnny Cash wrote a song about him and his wife called Tiger Whitehead. There are sites on the net that have pics of the brothers and they all have really long white beards almost as if they were hiding something. Well if you look at them real close you can see the Indian in them. Who said Native Americans couldn’t grow facial hair!!!LOL…

Hey there Bobby. Have you found any more about your MO line. Actually Blackwater is in Howard Co. not Pettis. Glasscow is up on or near the Missouri River, just a little note for you if you haven’t been there. Many Cherokees settled in this area. I have some family who came into MO up through that direction. They settled at first just north of Blackwater. Then went way south to the Greene Co/ Christian Co area. Grandma and Grandpa would mention the BlackDutch thing and then finally one time agreed that it was a cover up for the NDN-mixbloods. There are many or at least were several Kings and Shepards/Shephards/Shepherds and a Sheppard in the Sedalia area, including some surrounding towns. I just looked this name up in one of our phone books.

Hello Cherosage, Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you sooner, been tightening things up around the house for winter. I haven’t been researching much. Always best in the winter when it’s to nasty to go outside. My relatives were living in Blackwater Township. Hopefully I will get back to researching soon, Thanks…..Bobby

Bobby: Have you and Painted Horse thought to look at the Waite line IF Waddy may be a variation of this Cherokee Family Name “Waite”?

Linda, I look just like my father. The Native American comes from his mother. She was the daughter of Fred Leftwich and Lizzie Whitehead. I can’t find any proof of our family being Native. There is a lot of oral stories, and pictures, but no real proof. It really bothers me that I can’t find any info. Lizzie Whiteheads mother was Tennessee Kilpatrick and most of the oral history is focused on her.

Thanks Bobby, Samuel shows on census living in Granville, Caswell, and Person. His will was proven in Person county NC. I think he may tie in to Robert Whitehead of Orange County. But I don’t know that for sure.
