My ancestors are from Claiborne County, TN, too. My g-g-g-great grandfather was Christopher Dameron and he was married to Eliabeth Goins. They had a daughter, Whitmill, born around 1816-1820? She married my g-g-great grandfather, James A Hamilton. These people all originated in Virginia and ended up settling in Claiborne County before eventually going to KY.
Do you have any info on Eliabeth Goins? Iwould like to know who her father and mother was. I have been researching this for quite some time but never could come up with a connection. Can you help me?
Bill could you run this Dameron and Goins line back and see
what you can find Deed Book 1 Feb. 23 1808 Claiborne Co. Tenn.
April 13, 2006 at 1:13 pm #20377Whitmill’s age is fairly consistent over time, b.abt. 1801/2.
1860 Claiborne Co., Tn Census; P.O. Tasewell; 1 June p.141; family 902:
Jas A. HAMILTON, 64, m, – , farmer, $0, $395, Va.
Whitmill…………., 59, f, – , Tn.
Wm G……………., 28, m, – , laborer, Tn.
Orlena……………, 30, f, – , domestic, Tn.
Mary BROOKS, 61, f, – , Tn.
Elijah HAMILTON, 37, m, – , laborer, Tn., Idiotic.
1850 Claiborne Co., Tn Census; Subdivn 7; 11 Sept; p.261A; family 361:
James A. HAMILTON, 56, m, – , farmer, $400, Va.
Whitmill………………, 48, f, – , Tn.
Elizabeth……………, 23, f, – , Tn
Orleany…………….., 21, f, – , Tn.
William………………, 19, m, – , laborer, Tn.
Sally…………………., 13, f, – , Tn.
Elija………………….., 24, m, – , Tn. Idiotic.
1840 Claiborne Co., Tn Census; p.222
James A. HAMILTON
1 male 5 to 9.
1 male 30 to 39 (Washington ? )
1 male 40 to 49 (James A. )
1 female under 5.
2 females 10 to 14.
1 female 30 to 39.
1830 Claiborne Co., Tn Census; Eastern Divn; p.148:
James HAMILTON
1 male 30 to 39
2 females under 5
1 female 20 to 29.
1 female slave under 10.
same census, p. 150:
James Hamilton Sr.
1 male 20 to 29 (Washington ? )
1 male 70 to 79. (James Sr)
1 female 20 to 29
1 female 30 to 39
3 male slaves
5 female slaves
Just a guess, but I threw Washington Hamilton, b.abt. 1806/7 Va., in there because in 1860, he lived next door to James A and Whitmill, and when they moved to Ky in the 1860s, Washington Hamilton moved to Knox Co., Ky, in the early 1860s.
………………….
Elizabeth Goin:
The GOINs in early Claiborne Co and early Washington Co., NC (now Tn), are all ‘claimed’ descendants of Thomas Goin, b.abt. 1750 Va; d. 1838 Claiborne Co., Tn; m’d Rebecca Clark, b.1755 Brunswick Co., Va; d. 1795 Claiborne Co., Tn.
I was able to verify some of the particular names and dates that were listed for Thomas & Rebecca’s children, but not that they were his children:
1) Edwina, b.abt. 1774 Va; d. Jan 1858 – The ‘run-out’ info does not check out.
2) Levi, b.abt. 1778 NC (now Tn), d. Jun 1865 Claiborne Tn.
m’d Elizabeth Stallion, b. 1782 Va; d. 1858 Claiborne Tn – at least Levi’s wife was an Elizabeth, b.abt. 1782 on the 1850 census.
On that census, a Polly A. HAMILTON, 18, f, – , Tn, was living with them.
3) Sarah, b.abt. 1782 – can’t verify.
4) Pleasant, b. abt. 1784 Va, d. Nov 1838 Claiborne Tn; m’d _?_ HAMILTON (maybe a Mary, age 50s, or a Pamela, age 60s – apparent widows in 1840 census – but that’s just a guess)
5) Uriah, b.abt. 1785 Wash. Co., NC (now Tn), d. 1863 Claiborne Tn; m’d abt. 1808 Unknown; m’d 2) in 1846, Nancy Dickson/Dickerson, b.abt. 1804.
6) Isaac Abraham, b.abt. 1793 Wash. Co., NC (now Tn); d. Dec 1875 Claiborne Tn; m’d 1810 Claiborne Tn, Temperance Ann Gray, b.abt. 1796 Wash. Co. NC/Tn; d. 1880 Claiborne Tn.
I think you can discount Isaac and Uriah as parents of Elizabeth Goins based on their ages (maybe) and marriage dates (if Uriah’s is correct) compared to the dates listed for Whitmill’s birth year.
That leaves:
Pleasant, who reportedly m’d a Hamilton girl and had children Francis Marion Goin, Elanor Goin and Green Berry Goin – these children were 20, 18 and 14 y/o respectively, on the 1850 census and living in the household of William Hamilton, 43, Tn; Parmelia Hamilton, 40, Tn; Ann J. Hamilton, 8, Tn; Mary J. Hamilton, 2; Sidnia, 20, female, Tn; and Henry Goin, 43, Mu, Tn; Edmond Goin, 33, Mu, NC. In 1860 & 70, Henry Goin was living in Lee Co., Va.
and:
Levi, who had Polly Hamilton living in his household in 1850.
Anyway, those two are the ones I’d look at first, to find Elizabeth.

April 13, 2006 at 1:13 pm #20403“Thomas’ brother William Goin……married Elizabeth the widow of Christopher Dameron. ” (p.252 – same source)
Thomas, b.abt. 1750 to 1759 per 1830 Claiborne census, is claimed by some to have been b. 1750 or 1752 in Brunswick Co., Va. His father is said to be Thomas Goin, b.abt. 1729, d. 1797 Randolph Co., NC; and mother said to be a Hardister. There are a James and a Thomas Goins on the 1782 Surry Co., NC Tax List.
These researchers list William as b. 1756 Brunswick Co., Va, d. 1830s Claiborne Co., NC. The 1830 Claiborne census lists him as b. 1750 to 1759 and the oldest female is 50 to 59.
Curiously, Thomas has no females listed in his 1830 household.
On the 1787 Brunswick Co., Va Tax List are:
4/19 – Christo. Dameron
5/15 – Saml Dameron
5/15 – Barthw. Dameron
5/15 – Alex. Dameron (tax charged to Barthw. Dameron)
Can’t answer absolutely, the question of their specific Native descent.
