Oct. 12—WILLIAMSBORO — Three dozen individuals, most of them members of First United Methodist Church, made a field trip to Old Nutbush and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Williamsboro, a site around which much history of the area was made.
George Templeton “Tem” Blackburn II, unofficial Vance County historian, stood at the foot of the St. John’s pulpit as he took his listeners on a journey through time from the prehistory era through the social and religious history of what would become Vance County.
Artifacts found in the area date from 8,000 B.C. In the modern era, a presence of Occaneechi and Saponi Indians was known, but no settlements, he said. The area was traversed by Indian trading paths. And the great Roanoke River — another much-traveled avenue — was nearby.
