I hope someone can use this information…:)
ENROLLMENT CARDS:
Name: Clay, Robert
Tribe: Cherokee
Record Type: enrollment
Sex: M
Enrollment Type: P (Parent)
Card No.: 6139
Name: Clay, Robert
Tribe: Cherokee
Record Type: enrollment
Sex: M
Enrollment Type: P (Parent)
Card No.: D3103
Name: Clay, Sarah
Tribe: Cherokee
Record Type: enrollment
Sex: F
Enrollment Type: P (Parent)
Card No.: 799
THIS WAS THE RESPONSE I GOT WHEN I INQUIRED ABOUT THESE ENROLLMENT CARDS
These numbers are from the 1906 Final (Dawes) Roll of those who filed for land allottments in what was then Indian Terr., now the state of Oklahoma. The “P” designation means that this person was listed as a “parent” on the application of someone who filed an application. The enrollees had to prove their lineage by listing names of parents, grandparents and other family members.
When I check my copy of the Dawes Roll for these names, here is what I found:
Family census card no. 6139 (Cherokee by Blood) lists the following names:
Jennie Clay age 26, 3/4 blood quantum, roll no. 32731
Thomas Clay age 9, 7/8 blood, roll no. 32730
Johnson Ice age 7, 7/8 blood, roll no. 32732
Clabron Manus age 50, 1/2 blood, roll no. 28262
Polly Manus age 42, fullblood, roll no. 28263
September 14, 2006 at 12:47 am #23239My dad’s grandfather said that they lived in NY state before heading back to North Carolina.
His name was Peter James Clary, and he said that they changed their name to assimilate into society.
Everyone calls my dad and his family by their true last name, which is
“CLAY”
His father’s name might be “HEROD” I think???
Our family would LOVE to know where in NY State they lived, perhaps in the reservations up there.
We’re stumped!
Does anyone have any info on this?
Thanks a bunch everyone!:)
