Deb,
Do you know who the father of Charles Clay, Sr, is and who his other kids were?
I think it may have been John who got this grant below:
http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/cgi-bin/GetLONN.pl?first=230&last=&g_p=P1&collection=LO Patent
Title Clay, John.
Publication 13 July 1635.
Other Format Available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41.
Related See also the following surname(s): Clary.
Note Location: Charles City County.
Description: 1200 acres from the land &c. to Captn. Francis Hooke up to the head of Ward his Creeke.
Source: Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623-1643 (v.1 & 2), p. 230 (Reel 1).
Part of the index to the recorded copies of patents for land issued by the Secretary of the Colony serving as the colonial Land Office. The collection is housed in the Archives at the Library of Virginia.
Now, do you know how the John Clay who left a will in Prince Georges County, VA 9 Jan. 1710/11 connects to this family? He leaves [slaves] Indians Rose and Dillo to his wife; after her death to named children. If you need more info. from the will I can get some.
There appear to be a few sites on CLAY on the internet. Of course, these all have to be checked out to see if the information is correct and applies to your Clay line.

A John Clay on the militia list here; lots of interesting stuff abt. various Indian traders trading in the Carolinas and locally, notes Indians in the area including Saponi.

January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #18985DEBI – Interesting to note that the name Arminta is a name that is used every generation here in Bracey Community by the surnames of:
Boyd’s, Valentines, and Clary (Clay)
the spelling goes like this: Armentia
as a matter of fact, there are Armentia’s alive today on my father’s family line.
This pattern of names in my family lineage seems to occur like I stated from one generation to the next.
Does anyone else find the same pattern????
January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #18994Hi Felicia,
Arminta (sp. vaiations) runs through my family as well …… also the name Mahala is very common.(Nice names though different).
It can get confusing researching them unless you pay attention to the DOB…:) Do you have connections to my Clay family?
Debi
January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #18996Haven’t found the connection to my family’s name change in NY from Clay to Clary.
However, just learned that my dads’ other side of family the Valentines have other relatives with the Collins name in it…so, technically somewhere down the line we are related.
They have the same names also. I have always known that people from this old area of Virginia (Bracey) seem to be related to each other. This confirms oral knowledge of my family and their travels from NY state, back to NC, and finally back to Bracey.
Also other old families here….George, Marks, Cypress, Macklin, Boyd, Cannon….and others. It seems that perhaps you might need to check into these connections here in good old Bracey (smile).
Let’s ask Bill Childs for help…with his good looking self…my mom still talks about meeting him last June!
What do you think about this new info. does it make sense to you too?
January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #18999Felicia,
Is this the general area we are speaking of???

January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #19002Here are just a couple of the Clay/Clary entries– these are for a Thomas Clay–no relationship implied– from the grantee index at LVA (I go to the search page and type in “Clay grantee” or whatever name I am searching for. I like to check out the locations and geographical land marks, neighbors, etc. if listed):
Clay, Thomas
“15 July 1717.
Available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41.
See also the following surname(s): Clary. Location: Prince George County.
Description: 100 acres on the west side of Nanusend Creek andon the west side of the Great Branch thereof.
Source: Land Office Patents No. 10, 1710-1719, p. 337 (Reel 10). “
Then:
13 November 1721 Prince George County
“223 acres on the west side of Tuckers Branch of Nummisseen Creek”
Then:
22 July 1722
“168 acres adjoining the land whereon he now lives on the upper side of Nummisseen Creek.”
Then there is a Thomas Clay or Clary, (sometimes spelled Clary according to LVA indexing) with a grant on 20 August 1748 in
SURRY COUNTY;
“430 acres on the South side of Blackwater swamp. Beginning and eatending on the West side of Chincopin swamp”
The next one is rather odd and I don’t understand it as it says “Russell County”, but the date is 1755! & looks like same area
“12 February 1755
“67 acres on the south side of Blackwater Swamp and on Chincapin Swamp”

January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #19003I would like to eventually understand the connections – IF ANY – between some of these Southside folks and those who are later found in the area of the NEW RIVER, so just for the fun of it here is a grant for a Clay later on in Montgomery County. I am GUESSING that this is around the New River.
Brenda

January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #19004Brenda,
Blackwater Swamp is in Surry & Isle of Wight Co’s., from which flows the Blackwater River which joins the ‘Mottoway’ River at the NC border.

January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #19006Thank you, Bill. For some reason several years ago I became intrigued with the Black Water Swamp area for some reason, then got off track with a child’s prolonged illness, can’t find my notes now, etc. Trying to recall just why it seemed significant to me…
There is something about several swamp areas that just seem to rub me. I have been glancing through a book called THE STOLEN HOUSE, which is a reconstruction of a court case from the area that we are interested in around Blackfoot Town, once in MD, now Sussex Co. DE. There is some interesting information on Dagworthy and the forest/swamp economy and life that really reminds me of my WV ancestors before the coming of King Coal and outside industrialists…..The GREAT CYPRESS SWAMP is an awsome entity in itself….. Seems to me the area could have afforded some native “spin-offs” employment/survival opportunities…..
Additonally, I think that Blackfoot Quillwort [Isoetes Melanopoda]
is a wetlands plant…..
Thanks. I think I need a really big map and some pins like the FBI uses….
January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #19008A wall-sized interactive map that changes county lines chronologically with old and modern town and physical feature names on it and including Indian towns and tribes tied to those towns.
Now is that asking too much?

January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #19012I don’t think so….:)
I think It’s just what we need!

January 22, 2006 at 9:59 pm #19013Felicia,
Bill would be the best one to get involved in this discussion. He seems to be very knowledgable about MANY things and even though I have been doing research for 15 years I am truly still a novice.
I’ll take your advice and do some research in the Bracey area.
Thanks,
Debi
